This is a perfect location for visit to Durham - right in the city centre. On site parking a real plus.

We found comfortable accommodation in a character-packed pub. The Victoria has an unspoilt bar with a lovely atmosphere and friendly helpful staff. A great selection of local beers and a tremendous range of whiskies. It's an ideal place to stay if you want good value quality accommodation in a characterful setting.

Arriving outside "The Vic" you are greeted with a definative victorian building whose window boxes are beautifully stocked and kept, a real cottage garden effect. On entering the bar you are greeted by staff who are genuinly friendly and helpfull. The main bar, which has won various accolades including CAMRA pub of the year and also an award for the least changed pub in England! is devoid of large screen tv's, juke box or games machines. However, the lack of such entertainment works extremely well in the olde world bar bringing the art of conversation back to the living. The "locals" are only too happy to talk with interest making you yourself feel like one of the locals. Not to mention the selection of real ales available and if whisky is your tipple then "The Vic" is the place for you as there is a huge selection of both Scottish and Irish whiskies! Our room was a spacious size and was meticulously clean to which the housekeeper was only too happy to accomodate any of your needs. Breakfast was in a comfortable dining room where you could help yourself to beverages and the cook would cook your breakfast to order and just how you like it. Unlike many a place where breakfast is a buffet affair! "The Vic" is perfectly situated for trips away, even if it's just the ten minute walk to the palace green and the splendours of Durham Cathedral and the castle, (The lindisfarne Gospels being the attraction at the moment). If you come by car, garage parking spaces are available behind the pub, the staff and locals alike are only too happy to advise on places of interest to visit wether that be Hadrians Wall, The Metro Center or small historic villages. I heard about "The Vic" through a friend and I for one will certainly pass on my knowledge to others and will definately be coming back. definate value for money in my book.

The unprepossessing exterior of this pub belies what is within. The rooms are spacious. Both ours had baths and one had a four-poster bed.
The pub is a priceless example of late Victoriana, with engraved glass windows, original fireplaces, pictures of Queen Victoria and countless Toby jugs. It has a lovely, homely atmosphere, and a good range of beers and whiskeys.
Thanks to the footbridge across the Wear, the Victoria Inn provides quick access to the cathedral and castle. And there was a garage to park our car in.

One of the few pubs in the area that serves a large range of real ales and spirits and has very comfortable accommodation to boot.
Out for a night in Durham the Vic is the perfect place to start with a full strength ale and good hospitality, this isn't one of your ponsey wine bars, it's steeped in history and full of good people with good crack.
The room I stayed in had a very comfortable and authentic four poster bed with plenty of cupbard space for clothes and a decent size bathroom with over bath shower, sink and toilet.
A very nice experience in my opinion and well worth a visit.
Food was also really nice with a large serving of the traditional full English breakfast.
