The unprepossessing exterior of this pub belies what is within. The rooms are spacious. Both ours had baths and one had a four-poster bed.
The pub is a priceless example of late Victoriana, with engraved glass windows, original fireplaces, pictures of Queen Victoria and countless Toby jugs. It has a lovely, homely atmosphere, and a good range of beers and whiskeys.
Thanks to the footbridge across the Wear, the Victoria Inn provides quick access to the cathedral and castle. And there was a garage to park our car in.

One of the few pubs in the area that serves a large range of real ales and spirits and has very comfortable accommodation to boot.
Out for a night in Durham the Vic is the perfect place to start with a full strength ale and good hospitality, this isn't one of your ponsey wine bars, it's steeped in history and full of good people with good crack.
The room I stayed in had a very comfortable and authentic four poster bed with plenty of cupbard space for clothes and a decent size bathroom with over bath shower, sink and toilet.
A very nice experience in my opinion and well worth a visit.
Food was also really nice with a large serving of the traditional full English breakfast.

I needed a B&B within walking distance of Durham University and the Victoria Inn seemed to tick most of the buttons. It is a interesting, atmospheric pub, but it is not equipped for this year's weather. At midday the B&B does not open before the pub does at 11.45 am, so I had to stand outside in the cold for 15 minutes. My attic room was warm and comfortable initially, but the central heating is turned off in the night and I had to use my coat as an auxilliary blanket – there was no spare blanket in the room and one does not request one in the middle of the night. The bathroom was new but had no heater, except for an inadequate towel rail, so I forwent my bath in the morning.

The only food provided in the pub was toasties, which filled the spot initially but could have been more imaginative. The English breakfast was OK.

Room Tip: Bring your bed socks

We went back to this pub this week for the first time in years. Any worries that the pub had changed were soon put aside. This is an absolute gem not to be missed (and I spend a lot of time in old pubs drinking real beer!). Really friendly.

The rooms had been done up since last time we stayed - four poster bed and big flat screen TV. Couldn't make the shower work, so had a bath, but otherwise very comfortable. Breakfast was served in a separate dining room and was pretty good.

The VIctoria Inn is well named - a Victorian pub that has not lost its way. The bar areas are a treasure trove of memorabilia and the atmosphere is wonderfully friendly and welcoming. The collection of ales and whiskeys for a pub of its size is amazing. The bar staff are only too pleased to assist with a guided tour of the whiskey collection. Above the bar guests will find cosy bedrooms, all decorated in accordance with the atmosphere of the establishment. Comfortable beds with ample pillows are provided and in-room tea and coffee facilities are available on request. The rooms are warm and have TV and a perfectly adequate bathroom. This is the place for anyone wanting an 'adventure' into a real Victorian pub with clean, good bedrooms attached. It is thoroughly to be recommended. It is also ideally situated for exploring Durhan City on foot and good restautants are within easy walking distance.
