this charming old victorian pub is very centrally located, and is what it is: a pub with rooms. we had an attic room with very comfy bed and extremely well appointed bathroom. the breakfast was adequate and standard. we came as cyclists, and although the bikes were safe in the tiny back yard there was no rain shelter for them. It is a short easy walk to all the main attractions in the centre of this lovely historic old town.

We stayed here for a couple of nights on whilst on a short break in the area. The rooms are above the pub, in fact we were over the bar, but this is not a problem at all as there are no noise issues. The rooms are clean and have everything that's required. The bed was very comfortable and the shower was great, with towels changed daily. There is complimentary toileteries and tea and coffee making facilities upon request. The decor is in keeping with the building.
Breakfast was well cooked however it would have been nice to have had a choice, rather than being told what the breakfast was. There was no menu with any alternatives which is a shame really, but as I have already said the food was well cooked and tasty. If there was a choice at breakfast I would have given this place an excellent rating.
The pub is lovely with friendly locals and the landlord is very accommodating and always happy to point you in the right direction. The ale was superb and it can easily be seen why this place is a constant in the good beer guide.
The city centre is a five minute walk away and the Cathedral and cobbled City streets are stunning.
We definately would stay here again.

Stayed here for 2 nights following a recommendation from friends. From the moment we arrived to when we left, we were made very welcome. The room was very clean and comfortable. A lovely ensuite with complimentary toiletries. Tea and coffee making facilities in the the breakfast room. The breakfast was delicious and very filling. 5 Minute walk from the city centre. I would certainly recommend The Victoria and hope to return very soon.

Stayed here for a one night stopover on our way to Scotland. There is some parking round the back of the pub (just three spaces). The top floor room was clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. There was a nice ensuite bathroom with Molton Brown toiletries. Only downside was the hot water was a bit erratic so having a shower/bath was a bit tricky in the morning. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. The pub downstairs is great, a proper old-fashioned city centre pub, packed to the rafters. There was absolutely no noise from the pub and we had a very peaceful night's sleep. Perfect for a quick break rather than a holiday base.

Interesting place to stay. Uninviting city pub from the outside. Inside: unaltered Victorian bar downstairs, full of local characters (on both sides of the bar!). Lots of intriguing Victorian knick knacks and pictures. Some free parking. Easy walk to city centre (5 mins). We stayed on the top floor - above average standard room/bathroom. Good breakfasts. Good value. Would use again.
