“Value for money, with caveats”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

First let me say this would have been at least four stars had it not been for a few comments about the room:

On the real plus side, this is a very friendly, hospitable hotel. The staff were absolutely excellent - welcoming, friendly, attentive, courteous and the service in the restaurant was first-rate.

We were welcomed and checked in with a couple of tokens for complimentary drinks, which is always nice! The rooms are based around a courtyard and - hoorah! - are very dog-friendly too, another huge bonus for folk like us as we were travelling with the pooches.

The 2-night deal we had meant we got a 4-course dinner thrown in. The food was really good (and I'm the first to complain about food) and my steak actually cooked just as I like it (which is blue and dripping!). We staggered back to the room full and hardly able to move! Breakfast was pretty standard hotel fare, but lots of it and it was fresh and hot (or cold if you'd preferred that option).

So that was all good stuff. On the down side, there were a few niggles with the room ... Frankly, there were parts that were dirty and not been cleaned for ages, if ever (for example, behind the bedside cabinet where we reached for the plug was filthy and heaped with dust). The bathroom was scrappy with some tiles coming off and grout getting dirty. I think the cleaner couldn't reach below 6" off the ground around the edges of the room out of view. The shower was broken at one point and the head had a nozzle missing which affected the flow. The window latch was broken and couldn't be opened without a severe fight and the carpet was pretty threadbare.

However, it did not detract from our stay there as the plus sides redeemed the minus sides by a long way.

I would and probably will stay there again as I want to see more of Durham, which is lovely. I would also recommend the hotel, perhaps with some caveats viz the room issues. So go along and enjoy the upsides. It was definitely value for money. Thanks, Honest Lawyer (the first time I've actually met one ...!)

My wife and I booked for one night on special deal for dinner, bed and breakfast in June 2013. We found the hotel perfect for the break in our car journey to Scotland from the south. As the rooms are motel style we could park our car directly next to our room. The room was clean and comfortable and overlooked fields. We didn't anticipate getting a special dinner as we only paid £99 in total but we were pleasantly surprised to find that we could choose from the a la carte menu and the quality of the food was excellent. We would definitely stay again.

Today had afternoon tea with four friends and we had a lovely meal. Food was fresh and delicious and pleny=ty of it. The restaurant was pleasant and comfortable. Most of all we found the staff friendly and efficent - nothing was too much trouble for them. Thank you for a lovely day.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for one night while travelling further up North. Our room was warm and spacious, with the most comfortable bed I think I have ever slept in! The location is great for visiting Durham and there is a restaurant and bar on site (although we didn’t use it). The customer service was excellent and the accommodation was good value.

Spent 4 days at this hotel which is close to Durham and the park and ride service. Hotel was very clean. breakfast arrangements seemed to change every day. Sometimes it was buffet other days it was table order. breakfast was nothing special but edible. English breakfast was mainly only warm most mornings. The staff where very friendly and helpful.
I would stay agin if in the area.

We returned once again to the Honest Lawyer for an Annual Event in a Team of Friends to work for the weekend. We all look forward to staying here. Staff are lovely. Facilities are clean and well maintained and comfortable. This year I had a great view from our room over the fields and the night sky was magic. Our room is adequate and comfortable, great for our work as the vehicles are easily parked outside our room doors. Car park is spacious and easy access to turn park and unload and load. We had 2 good nights sleep and 2 great breakfasts - Sunday was buffet and Monday waitress service. We ate at the hotel 2 nights and had lovely food. We are a varied bunch with dietary needs and one or two of us are rather picky BUT they managed to satisfy ALL. The food is quality and well presented and great value. The Hotel is also excellent value for money. Loved the addition of the boutique, great for unusual gifts and curiosities and they lady on duty was charming. The bar has character and the staff attentive and charming. All in all a good trip and look forward to our return. Vouchers for the drinks appreciated and a nice little extra to show appreciation of our custom.
