We stayed at the Kingslodge hotel for one night, and chose it in part as it accepts dogs. But it also looked decent for humans!

It looks like it has been refurbished recently, and is certainly smart on the exterior and inside the bar and restaurant. The rooms haven't had quite so much care and attention, and although clean, they really need looking at.
That said, everything worked and was comfortable, it just looked a bit tired.
The shower looked ancient - but was wonderful! Looks can be deceiving...

The room was too warm for us, even with no heating on. We opened the window but even that didn't seem to make much difference.

The staff at the Kingslodge were great, really friendly and helpful.

And we ate dinner in the bar (with our dog). The menu is a typical pub menu and the food was done very well - can't fault it for what it was. The service was quick.

The hotel is also very conveniently located for the train station which was useful.

Breakfast was good, and again the service that morning was excellent.

The team do their management proud here,

I don't normally put reviews on Trip Advisor for our local area, but feel that the King's Lodge deserves every accolade for the way that they have turned the establishment around form a few years ago.
My husband and I used to frequent the hotel, but then stopped due to the quality of service and selection of drinks/food. We only found out recently that it Was under new management and had been completely renovated, so decided to pop in and try it out.
How pleased I am that we did. The bar and restaurant are exceptionally well managed by John and Paul and I cannot express how helpful and willing to please all of their staff are, without exception. This is so refreshing in a world where the locals are dying. I am happy to advise that the King's Losge is now firmly our local again and can recommend without hesitation.

Room Tip: An oasis in the city, but a stone's throw from the centre

My wife and I stayed here for two nights and it was O.K - but even after the "extensive refurbishment" the bedroom, or at least the one we had, was looking decidedly jaded and old fashioned: the bathroom heater & shaving light didn't work, the shower controls were antiquated and the glass bathroom shelf was missing. Apart from that, and even with the windows open, the room was uncomfortably hot. However these things were offset by the lovely, friendly staff and the quality of the food which, although a bit pricey, was exemplary. Breakfast was exceptionally good.

A genuine friendly welcoming greeting on arrival is a good sign and it wasn't a surprise then that all the staff we encountered treated us in a similar way. It makes for a happy enjoyable stay when you add the high quality of the recently modernised rooms and the well cooked traditional inn meals. Well recommended for anyone wanting a comfortable stay to visit the attractions of Durham.

Called in here for a meal after a lovely autumn walk in Durham. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating. Special mention to Manager Leanne. We felt very welcome bringing our dog into the bar area. Food was lovely . Decor very clean and tasteful.
We are planning a return trip to stay overnight. Would highly recommend this place for a trip into Durham .
