“Served its purpose but a little tired looking”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

Visiting for the weekend by train this was a very conveniently located place to stay - close to the station and easy access to the city centre. The hotel itself was a little disappointing for the price - with rather battered furniture in the room, carpet tired looking, a squeaky bed, a missing light bulb, and a shower room where the fittings and decor looked a little DIY. It was though quiet and comfortable.

Beware, the restaurant is apparently not part of the hotel management. We had assumed that we would be able to have dinner there, but found the restaurant was already fully booked for the evening when we arrived early afternoon. It seems the restaurant is popular so something to look out for when you book if you intend to dine there. ( The hotel staff had not forewarned us of this when we booked.)

Breakfast was fine - though service not particularly attentive.

All our rooms are continually updated and decorated. I cannot see where the "battered furniture" or "tired looking carpet" comes into it If the bed was squeaky then we would have moved the guest to another room, on request. There may have been a missing lightbulb which will since have been replaced. This is the very first comment we have had regarding the shower rooms, they are modern and clean. We usually suggest that guests make dinner reservations on booking. After making enquiries, it emerged that there was availability for dinner reservations but not at a time that suited the guest.

We stayed at Kingslodge with our baby while on a trip to the university (of which we are both graduates). Our booking was transferred after our original choice of hotel experienced a boiler failure. No problem for us, however: we were greeted with the customary Durham humour we know and love and throughout our stay they couldn't do enough for us, especially where our baby was concerned.

Breakfast was plentiful and filling and I highly recommend the cooked breakfast. The room was well appointed and the bed comfortable - interestingly enough we had the dreaded room 13 above the kitchen (mentioned in a number of reviews!) but the noise level was fine. We didn't get chance to eat at Finbarr's but I hear from university staff that it's very good.

The hotel is ideally located for the station, being in the Viaduct area of the city; it also has ample -and free- parking which is unusual for Durham. It's a short walk into the city centre but easily accessible.

Would definitely stay again.

This was our second visit to Kingslodge and we were still charmed by it! Friendly staff, charming decor, free wi-fi.

A slight disappointment this time was our room. The previous room where we stayed felt larger and had nicer furniture. But the bed was comfortable, and the room was well equipped with pants press, ironing board and steam iron. These came in handy because I had to straighten out my suite for my Congregation :)

Breakfast at Finbarr's never fails to satisfy - prompt service, good full English with adequate portions, and we could help ourselves to the continental breakfast items as well.

Being just a short walk into town we spent quite a lot of time just browsing through the shops. There were about 5-6 charity shops (like Salvation Army, and others) that sold pretty good quality pre-loved clothes and other stuff and at super low prices!

The proximity to the rail station was also great - it was convenient enough for us to take a train (about 18 mins) to Newcastle to meet a friend for dinner and back again. After we checked out, it was also convenient for us to hop on to a train that brought us to Edinburgh, Scotland (about 2+ hrs).

Overall it was a pleasant stay!

A nice hotel in the heart of Durham however it needs kick up the behind. Slow service by dilatory staff still stuck in the eighties. They definitely need coffee training I've had better packet cappuccinos. More attention to detail please.

Stayed here for one night when visiting Durham for shopping and choral event at the Cathedral. Easy to walk into the City, even up hill to the Cathedral only took about 20 minutes. Didn't really use the facilities as we were out all day and evening. There seemed to be a pleasant residents' lounge with free tea and coffee, a bar and a restaurant, but we just used our room. Twin room was quite spacious, warm and with comfortable beds. Shower room quite small but worked fine, everything very clean. Breakfast included; everything you might wish for. Table linen crisp and clean, nice ambiance . All in all, very pleasant and great to have somewhere to park whilst exploring the city. Would come again.

Stayed for the second year running here in room for 3 with 2 daughters visiting oldest daughter at university in Durham. Staff are very pleasant, room was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast excellent. Very conveniently located for walking into City of Durham and there is parking at the back of the hotel. My only gripe would be the room was a little hot, even with no heating on.

We had booked an alternative hotel in Durham whilst visiting the university and needed a family room. When we arrived we discovered they had double booked us but found us the Kingslodge as an alternative. It was £12 cheaper and we were worried as to the quality as it had been so easy to book at a time when family rooms were not available due to the numbers of students visiting the open day. But we needn't have been. This was a good location, with nice restaurant and bar, where we enjoyed the England game with a variety of guests including other visiting students. The room was large with good shower and comfy beds. The third bed was a proper full size single, not a z-bed and there was a car park where we could leave our car all day whilst at the university. Lovely restaurant with excellent breakfast including scrambled eggs and salmon to order. Pleasant stay after bad start at first hotel.
