Ranked #6 of 40 Durham B&B and Inns

Has the agreeable atmosphere of a small, independent hotel, with professional and polite staff.
It’s completely surrounded by trees, and there’s a nice little garden at the front, which you can see on their website, with a handful of garden tables & chairs. Also has a cosy residents lounge with plenty of big leather armchairs, complimentary hot drinks, biscuits, newspaper and CD player/ radio.
Didn’t go in the bar, so can’t comment on this.

Breakfast was good in Finbar’s restaurant - self-service continental options followed by cooked English breakfast, with quick and professional table service. The dinner menu looked excellent. If we came back to Durham we‘d probably stay in cheaper accomodation and spend our money on dinner in Finbar‘s.

Rooms were comfortable and adequately equipped with nice shower, toiletries, biscuits, hot drinks, flat screen TV etc. Free wi-fi too. However, there’s nothing that you wouldn’t find in a good quality B&B at a lower price. There is a bus depot next door, which was open surprisingly late. It didn’t disturb us, but light / early sleepers on that side of the hotel might want to request a room on another side.

The location is close to the train station, about 5 mins walk downhill from the station with suitcase, allow 10 mins on way back. It was about 10 mins walk from the hotel to the river/ town centre, and another 15 mins walk from there uphill to the cathedral/ castle.

There’s a pub at the end of the road which does above average pub meals at a good price, and attracts it’s fair share of tourists and local (older) drinkers alike.

Overall, I liked the King's Lodge, it’s nice, clean and well situated with good service, but 90+ pounds per night for a double room here is definitely too high a price.

Good value and quiet location - just a 5 minute walk from the bottom of the rail station hill and walkable to the city centre - this hotel is comfortable with a very nice atmosphere and attractive front garden. The room was clean and well furnished - if a little dated - the bathroom was spacious and the service was very good (taxi booked for us immediately, wake-up call offered, no queue for check-in/out).
The star of the show is the restaurant which is modern and stylish with an excellent-looking menu. We only got to have breakfast here but it was fantastic and including it in the room cost gives real value for money.
My only niggly suggestions would be to update some of the decor/furnishings, provide shampoo/conditioner in the bathroom (not just shower gel and soap) and to cook the sausages at breakfast a little more.
Top tip - they sometimes offer a discount if you pay cash.

Room Tip: Room 8 was nice but only had a car park view

We had a two night stay and were welcomed and quickly shown to our room. It was an airy good sized room with a king size bed and windows on both sides. Separate bathroom with shower and toilet. A heater in the bathroom and in the bedroom. Fan for summer but it was cool when we stayed so that's not a problem. Plenty of fluffy white towels, good toiletries, a comfortable bed an lounge chairs for relaxing.

The TV did not have many channels to choose but this didn't bother us and there is wifi available. There was also a desk, bureau with drawers and separate wardrobe.

We ate in Finbarrs restaurant downstairs adjacent to the lobby. There is an entrance for guests and one for the public from the car park. The standard of service and quality of the food was excellent. Prices were reasonable and they have a specials menu most nights if you dine early. The staff were unobtrusive and helpful. Breakfast is also served in this restaurant and, like the evening meal was of a very high standard. Great value for money overall.

Room Tip: Suggest book the B & B rates from the website.

Stayed one night in Durham to see the cathedral, castle and other touristy things and chose this hotel due to its location being walkable into the town centre and its price. We booked directly (telephone) with the hotel and recieved a deal with breakfast better than any of the websites.
We arrived early (10:30) and as the room was ready were allowed to check in. Check in and other staff were friendly, cheerful and always helpful. We had room 6 which had a dual aspect, good comfortable bed and plenty of space. It was clean, fresh and looked over the rear of the hotel. Double glazing blocked any noise although during our midweek stay the hotel was very quiet. Room had everything required- sitting area ,TV, tea/coffee, iron, hair dryer and well equiped bathroom. If staying in Durham again my wife and i would return as the hotel is well located within woodland about 5 miniutes walk from the town with lots of parking. (Much better located than the budget chains on the edge of the city)
Breakfast was included in our rate which was pretty standard but wholesome and freshly cooked for us. The hotel is currently offering a discount if the bill is settled by cash which made a good deal feel even better.
The restuarant looked fine (we ate out in the evening) although we did use the bar where drinks were not expensive as in many other hotel bars. Again if staying again we would give the resturant a try.
I would like to complement all the hotel staff we encountered who were all so helpful, professional and keen to please. The Kingslodge is not a five star hotel or part of a souless chain but a small 'country type' hotel located in Durham close to the city center. Although I expect not every room was to the standard of number 6 my wife and I could find few areas of fault.

This is a nice, clean, convenient place to stay. It is close to downtown life but away from the bustle for a quiet night. We particularly enjoyed the little nature preserve right behind the parking lot; a lovely place for a walk after dinner.
