“Second best view in Durham”
Reviewed October 23, 2013

The best view of Durham is coming in to the station from the South however the view from the Palace Green is also great. You can admire the buildings all the way round and get an up close view of both the Cathedral and the Castle, both of which are a must-see. Traffic is not allowed up here apart from access which is great BUT there are events held regularly so when we came today there was a massive marquee which spoilt things a bit.

“Pick of the Crop”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

For any traveller to Durham the 'must visit' place is Palace Green which is sited on a rocky outcrop surrounded on three sides by the River Wear. The green is a lawned quadrangle in the very heart of this historic city. It's location is unique with the cathedral on one side, the castle on the opposite end and both other sides line with historic buildings.
The area is closed to vehicular traffic and access is by foot up through the old area or alternatively along the banks of the Wear or via one of two bridges.
The spectre from Palace Green is marvellous and breathtaking. It has thrilled generations of pilgrims and visitors for hundreds of years.

A beautiful place to sit and relax, take in the old buildings surrounding the green and wonder at the magnificent cathedral.
