Always a good go to place for lovely fantastic quality foods but tonight was the exception!! Service was amazing!! Our waitress was very pleasant & professional. Lovely warm atmosphere as always but unfortunately think the chef was having a bad day!! Starters were good. Mains diabolical!! My chicken/haggis was Luke warm & very dry! Side veg had to be seen to be believed!! (Photos) hubbys rare steak looked more like overcooked liver!! Black pudding was beyond overcooked!! Asked for french mustard that was so set in the pot we could’ve even get it out with the steak knife!! Very disappointed as didn’t expect this from this place. Reluctantly complained & they were very apologetic,so weren’t charged for starters but would’ve rather paid full had good foods.

This is a lovely pub a short distance out of Durham City. The place is clean and has a decent range of real ales available along with a good selection of spirits. It is slighly out of the way if you are not driving but a taxi will be around £10 from Durham and it's worth a trip out. They do food, while I havn't eaten here myself I have heard good reports. Recommended.

The pub was very busy on the night of our visit despite it being between Christmas and New Year when you imagine that people have eaten and drunk their fill. It was a first visit and, being unfamiliar with the area, it was a bit hard to find along dark rural lanes. The pub had a nice atmosphere and the various rooms made it seem cosy for a large establishment. We were seated opposite the kitchen door and it was obvious that there were lots of cooks as well as plenty of waiting staff.
The menu was extensive and not expensive. The food was nicely cooked although the venison loin that was ordered as 'pink' came cooked right through. Would go again when in the north east.
