“A gem in the heart of Durham”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2013

This hotel is just over the predestrian bridge from the centre of Durham and has parking at the rear , so is very conveniently placed forboth tourism and business. It is a gem for those of us who are fed up with the anonymity of modern chain hotels; a listed building - the Three Tuns offers the unique opportunity of a stay in historical surroundings some of which date back to Jacobean times. It is the oldest licensed house in the city, It's not supersmart, but that's its charm. It offers clean, vfm, comfortable rooms and the service is efficient and professional. When I was cold during a recent sharp spell, I was immediately provided with a second duck down duvet. Excellent service at reception from Stephen. Go and see the dining room and the drawing room internal stairs for yourself!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel as sometimes the front of the hotel is witness to late night...

I stayed at this hotel a number of years ago and found it to be perfectly acceptable. When I found that I needed to return to Durham I was quite happy to book a room and stay in the hotel again. However, my return visit has not been as positive. The hotel is extremely run down and in need of a serious face lift. My first room had no security chain on the door - all the fittings were there, but the actual chain was missing, obviously broken and unreplaced - when I asked to move to a room which had a security chain I was told by reception that "none of the rooms have those anymore"! I persisted and asked that someone check some rooms....and they found one which had a security chain. Once in the room it is clear that the decor and fittings have not been updated in a number of years and was in desperate need of refreshing. In the bathroom the grout, sealant and shower curtain had varying degrees of mildew, no bathmat was provided.

The breakfast was really basic, the cooked version was for my tastes too greasy and it was clear that it had sat under heat lamps for some time before being brought out to me.....if the hotel was busy it would be understandable....but it wasn't I think that there were only 8 guests in total.

Over all I cannot recommend this hotel. It is shabby and in desperate need of refurbishment, with other city centre hotel choices available I would suggest that anyone looking to stay in Durham look else where.

Just recently stayed at this lovely hotel which is situated in the centre of Durham. It was excellent value for money and the staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful especially Stephen and Alan!!!
Food was exceptionally good and plenty of choice. The hotel was clean but it needs updating in pla would highly reccommend itces but this will certailnly not deter us from visiting in the near future. We would highly reccommend this hotel and cannot speak too highly about the excellent staff.

Great hotel base for both Durham itself and north Yorkshire in general. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The food was good quality and I enjoyed my wee blether with chef about football! We were fascinated by the latex gloves in the toilet in our room which were happily floating in the bowl when we arrived and were still there when we left after numerous flushes. Had they been left by the chambermaid, by someone from a gynecology convention or previous guests with interesting night time activities....we will never know sadly.

Glad to hear you enjoyed yourselves but as for the mystery of the gloves , the hotel is haunted?

The hotel outside in need of a clean up. Downstairs when you walk in is lovely, really nice reception area and seating area. Looks promising when you first go in. Hotel corridors and carpets looking very shabby. When you first walk in your room it looks nice until you look closer. Walls are covered in stains and marks, furniture chipped and old. Curtains torn and old. Bathroom was awful. Bathtub and sink had hairs in, cheap old Lino on floor, and side of the bath was hanging off. Sealant round the bath is old and brown. Shower was awful too. Breakfast was pretty average, older waiter with dark hair went outside for a cigarette during breakfast service, didnt wash his hands when he came back in. He then started serving people food. There was a younger man with glasses and his hair slicked back, he seemed quite pleasant. The receptionist was also nice. Didnt feel we could raise our complaints about room as we only paid 65.00. However wishing I had now as it was just an unpleasant stay. The beds were very comfy though

We had a three day half board break which was excellent value. They staff gave us a warm welcome and it is in an excellent position with views of the cathedral. The decor needs some updating but everywhere was clean and bright. The food was excellent and the chef was very approachable. All the staff where very friendly and helpful.

The hotel is in an good location, a short walk from the lovely city centre of Durham, unfortunately the hotel needs a good lick of paint and an update, the building is quite old and has a historical interior. Staff were freindly and helpful, breakfast is average.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front suffer from noise from the main road.
