We had attended a wedding in Beamish Hall the previous night and decided to stay over another night in the area before heading home. The location of this hotel is magnificent for exploration of Durham, but as with everywhere else in said city, parking is difficult and we just about got parked in the hotel car park. Was slightly strange that Marriott do not have exclusive use of their own car park, with so few spaces, it is also a public pay & display. That was the only negative really. The reception staff were friendly and whizzed us through check-in without issue. The room was standard, very comfortable, well appointed and clean. Very happy and would stay again.

On arrrival we found the carpark full and unlike previous trips here there was no system for double parking and leaving keys at reception which had always worked fine. Carpark is now contracted out and public parking is allowed-quite hopeless in a city centre hotel. Duty manager (slovenly to say the least) was unhelpful and not apologetic. Eventually another member of staff was able to help as a receptionist was going off shift and we had her parking space. We will not be booking here agagin though as it is impossible to park in Durham City on the road on saturdays.
Our next problem was breakfast on Sunday. We had to wait half an hour as they were operating only one dining room. When we were eventually seated there were at least 5 empty tables. The same slovenly duty manager seemed unaware of normal custormer service conventions like politeness or smart appearance. The whole place was chaotic and amateurish. And the lift wasn't working.

Room Tip: Ask for 2 double beds

Stayed here for one night on business. Great location close to centre and cathedral and castle. Staff were friendly and hepful without exception, the room was well equipped and breakfast and dinner good too. Would definitely return. (The pool was closed but I had been told this when booking)

Hotel was full the night we stayed and there were two wedding receptions taking place. We travelled as a couple. Parking was very difficult. There are many more rooms than parking spaces, and this in an area which is notoriously difficult for parking. We dined in the restaurant that night and were surprised to find that a wedding reception was taking place on the other side of a lace curtain! Indeed, all diners were asked to be quiet while the best man gave his speech. Earlier, in the bar, the barman had to go in search of wine glasses which presumably were all in use.
The next morning we arrived for breakfast at 9.30 but the breakfast room was full and we had to wait in a 'waiting room' with about 20 others. We were each given a number and were called when a table was free. Coffee and croissants were made available while we waited for a table, but as we were waiting for coffee and croissants it all seemed a bit bizarre. After about a 20 minute wait, we were led through to a very busy dining room.
The hotel has just one lift, and that morning it was out of order ( as it had been briefly the night before). We had a room on the 3rd floor, and walked down for breakfast. I was distressed to find the lift still out of order after breakfast as I was physically unable to walk up to the 3rd floor. I was not able to return to our room at all. My husband climbed the stairs and packed and brought our bags down. As we were leaving at mid- day, an engineer arrived to look at the lift- when most people had checked out. I thought the delay indicated a casual attitude.
To sum up, this hotel is centrally located for the major attractions in Durham. The staff are courteous and helpful. The food at dinner was excellent. However, the hotel is quite old-fashioned and the lift needs replacing. The hotel clearly does not have the resources to cope when it is full. Lace curtains , waiting rooms for breakfast ,no working lift and find a parking place? Farcical! Next time I'll try the Radisson.

Stayed here on business for 2 nights. The hotel is centrally located and has convenient on site parking. My bedroom was quite small (single bed) and freezing cold due to the huge Victorian sash windows. It took a while to warm the room up and I even asked for a hot water bottle as the bed was cold! That being said it is Durham in November! The room was very clean and the bed really comfortable. The leisure facilities was closed which was a shame. Breakfast was adequate- nothing special. Overall very friendly service and a clean room. I would say that this is better than average but not special in anyway.

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights from Saturday 3rd November. The overall experience was very good - the Castle Suite was excellent.

The only poor part of our stay was the length of time that we had to wait on Sunday morning to be seated for our breakfast. This was at least half an hour after having our room number taken. Whilst we were in no particular hurry it may have been different if we had a timetable to keep to. I notice that some guests were less than happy. The staff said that this happens every Sunday morning because everyone seems to come down for breakfast later on that day - not sure of the logic there.

The breakfast itself was excellent and there was no repeat of the experience on Monday morning, but just be careful if you have a train to catch or something similar on a Sunday morning.

Room Tip: See comment re Castle Suite - very quiet in spite of being on main junction.
