Description: Passion. It is quite often impossible to summarise the experience created within a restaurant with just one word. Passion. Passion to produce the best food possible with the freshest and finest ingredients we can scour the world to find. Passion to strive to be the best. Passion to ensure that our customers remember. Passion to cater for people from all walks of life and give them a lasting memory of our restaurant. We're not going to tell you about how we have stunning river views with outdoor dining set in a 13th Century cellar conversion. We're not going to bore you with how difficult we are to find. We want you to come here, seek us out, walk down those narrow steps, be surprised by what lies beneath and leave wishing you had found us sooner. We're not perfect, we're not the best in the world, but we strive to be the best we can and evolve every day, so come join us on our journey.

We had a lovely meal at the Cellar door. Hidden away and we haven't spotted it before now. Lovely bottle of wine. The service was great. It would be a super place to visit during the summer months so you could sit outside overlooking the river. Book in advance as it is always busy.

Been to the Cellar Door on numerous occasions as it is local. We have never ever had a bad meal here...always fresh and to order, however it does take a long time to receive your meal, however full or empty the restauant is! I don't know if this is just due to under-staffing or a ploy to get you to order more drinks! Ranting aside, I would still return here, especially in the summer months to dine al-fresco for a long summer lunch on the lovely rustic patio areas overlooking the River Wear. I would recommend the seabass and the mussels which are as fresh as can be, and the pizzas are in my opinion, the best in Durham and good value too! Not forgetting the staff ,who are very helpful , friendly and informal which is great and relaxing.

I'm giving a score of two out of five because the service was excellent. My risotto was terrible and contained large segments of raw garlic. The only other vegetarian option was butternut squash. However, my friend enjoyed the steak, even though some was too fatty to eat. I have visited on two previous occasions and each time the food was a let down.

We have returned to this lovely restaurant over and over again. The food is without doubt, fresh, (on the premises) prepared. Delicious and beautifully presented. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The person at the door to the restaurant, although very friendly, went way over the top with his welcoming which could be a put off for some but as we have been many times before, we knew what to expect. The setting is cosy, low lighting and inviting. A little high on pricing but worth a treat. Highly recommended.

Happened upon this lovely restaurant overlooking the river by chance . Delightful welcome. View was fab. Service immaculate . First mojito the bar staff felt was not up to scratch so replaced free of charge .
Melt In the mouth calves liver . Lovely home cured salmon .
Good wine list. Recommend the Sauvignon blanc
