My husband and I booked this hotel very last minute for one night to escape the kids for our 5th anniversary! We arrived early and were able to book in despite arriving over an hour before our check in time.We went to our room and found it to be clean and comfortable. The pools both inside and out were extremely clean as were all areas of the hotel. Our highlight was our evening meal in the resturant..the food was fabulous [the chicken liver pate is to die for!]and the service from William was wonderful, nothing was too much trouble. His 'local' knowledge was helpful too and he even advised us where to park in the town.Thankyou William...what a lovely evening we had.The breakfast was fabulous too and the resturant was very busy but we were seated immediately in the bar..the staff were all incredibly busy but we particularly noticed a young blonde chap [didnt get his name sadly] running round like a headless chicken and all the time with a smile on his face! This hotel is a 3 star but we rate it higher...very relaxing weekend...BLISS! Thankyou all very much and we hope to visit again soon.

Myself, my wife and 8 year old daughter visited North Devon last weekend. I had picked the Barnstaple hotel as it was near the top of the list on booking.com. It turned out to be a good move. Upon arrival, the checkin was handled quickly and then we found the room to be tidy and well appointed. My wife suffers chronic back pain and so went straight into a warm bath.
The hotel didn't make a fuss about our daughter staying in the same room with parents and didn't enforce a surcharge, even though it later transpired that they could have done.
The next morning, we had breakfast and there was a wide variety of cooked and continental items to choose from with the breakfast bar cook willing to do poached or fried eggs to order, and fish cooked to order in the main kitchen.
After a hearty breakfast, we went for a swim and found that both indoor and outdoor pools were very nice places to be. The health club is available to residents at no extra cost and this was a good way to meet the locals, who were members of the health club - a good way to get recommendations on the sights to be seen and the ones to be avoided.
The changing rooms are split male/female, with no family changing - not a problem, just something to be aware of. Each changing room had a sauna .
After swimming, we ordered some food from the attendant and this was provided quickly and charged to the room without any fuss. There was a good choice of pre-made but fresh sandwiches at a low price, hot food of various kinds, smoothies, other soft drinks and drinks from the bar. Service and attentiveness to guests and their requirements was to a very high standard.
After leaving the hotel, we explored a couple of local sights within a 15 mile radius, including Clovelly, an ancient village, owned by one family since 1100 , and Westward Ho! , a local seaside resort with a good beach.
Returning to the hotel, we had dinner in the restaurant and had good food. My daughter was also well catered for.
THat night there was a bit of disturbance from the band playing downstairs in the function room, but otherwise no issues to report.
THe following day, after breakfast, myself and my daughter went for another swim. The checkout time was generous at 11am and although we were assured we could have carried on using the swimming pools after checkout, we had a few hours' drive home, so we left.

A thoroughly enjoyable experience and I would recommend the Barnstaple hotel very highly.

Minor NIggles :
1) Sort out the door at the hotel reception - this is very heavy, such that children can't open or hold it open, and people carrying bags struggle to gain access. A good automatic door would solve these problems.
2) The mattress was a bit firm, but I am used to a memory foam one at home.

That's literally everything I've got to complain about, it's that good.

Room Tip: If plenty of rooms are available, request one that is not above the function rooms or the bar.

We booked only a few days before, have been to Brend Hotels before, and know their standards are very good!
As usual and not to be dissapointed, beautifully clean, proffessional, and the food just first class, well done, and thanks for a great break!

Room Tip: rooms overlooking the pool, very quiet.

I've used this Hotel for many conferences, even on a small scale. We are always treated as welcome guest. I've attended 4 or 5 functions and enjoyed quality food along with good service. The accommodation has always been to a good standard, I think I've stayed in 3 rooms now. The price is always affordable.
