My wife and I have just stayed at this hotel for two nights we have stayed at a few of brend group hotels but to date this is by far the best. Food very good ,tasty and hot .Staff very helpful no matter what we asked they always obliged. I can`t comment on the female downstairs toilets but the gents are worth a visit just to see how bright and so clean. The staff are a credit to the hotel.

The hotel is stuck in the Edwardian age, which is probably when it was last renovated. The bedrooms are outdated, and offer poor value for money, the bathrooms are cold and of cheap quality. One is under the impression that this is probably the chain's cash cow, and relies heavily on its blue rinse clientele. Don't expect breakfast before 7:30, they make sure of that. The restaurant is heinously overpriced for the average fare it serves up. Some suggested improvements could be modern, contemporary rooms for business travellers. I would not recommend staying here unless you are above the age of 90 and have come on a coach trip to the West Country.

Delightful hotel with efficient friendly staff. The room we had been allocated had access up quite steep stairs and was unsuitable because of this , but was changed without question. There is a lift in the main hotel but not in the annex. Excellent food! Parking could be a problem in high season.

We stayed for three nights towards the end of October. We were recommended to this hotel by a friend who visits regularly. He said the food was very good, but we found that it was a bit disappointing - perhaps our expectation had been set too high? The evening menu was not very adventurous and the food was good, but not great. It may be that the regular visitors like to have safe choices on the menu. We only had a main course and a dessert, and wondered whether more thought had been given to the starters. The price for a two course meal was not in my view low, so it was a bit annoying to see that there were possibly more interesting choices available for an extra cost (but why salmon should be extra I don't know). The breakfasts were fine but not outstanding.

The standard double room was OK for the price, and as normal had one easy chair and one less comfortable desk chair. It looked as though the room was really designed for a single person. It may be that the better rooms have more space and two comfy chairs. However, the hotel does have a double size lounge, as well as other seating, although the lighting was a little low for reading in places. We had chosen a room on the third floor, so did not have any guests above us. We were at the back, so yes, if you looked down you could see the car park, but being high up you could look across the town to the hills beyond. I did hear the glass being collected in the mornings, but don't know how it could be emptied quietly.

The staff were very good - I could not fault the service. It is unusual to see so many staff in the dining room these days, and they did not overdo the attention.

The position is excellent. I had not been to Barnstaple before and the hotel was ideally placed to explore the town - which is all on the level. It was also nice to be able to walk up or down the river, along the Tarka Trail. I assume that in the summer this may have lots of cyclists - we did not see many in the evening.

Room Tip: What was good for us was being high up - you then get a view whether you are at the front (river) or...

I have just returned from 4 days at the Imperial Hotel,Barnstaple, I was there with my husband, and 2 friends (they were new to the hotel) and we all found the whole experience wonderful. The staff can't do enough for you, they are friendly, efficient,- a smile for everyone, and all very highly trained. The food was excellent, the room very comfortable with everything that we could possibly need, the whole hotel is immaculate, with great attention to detail - fresh flowers in all the reception areas, even in the cloakrooms!. The position is very central, a few minutes from the centre of the town, and a lovely river walk just over the road from the hotel. This is our 3rd time at this hotel, and our friends that came with us will be going there again - they said 'what a beautiful find'. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff, all our needs were attended to straight away. We shall be going back again and again!!!
The town of Barnstaple is very interesting, and has a lovely pannier market, with different stalls on various days. It also has a very friendly cafe located in the pannier market - good coffee and wonderful cakes!

Room Tip: Room 5 in the River court was very comfortable - but does face onto a courtyard, but as we had a dog...

Another lovely three night stay at the Imperial, this time for our 50th wedding anniversary. The food, the staff, the ambience is unbeatable We had one of the newly refurbished rooms on the first floor which was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Our next visit will hopefully be in February for my birthday. I think you all need a pat on the back for always smiling and doing everything you can to make each visit very special.

We stayed here for a weekend and found it extremely comfortable and ideally located to explore Barnstaple. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the room was very clean and well equipped. We would thoroughly recommend it.
