“A Great Day Out”
Reviewed December 15, 2012

Arlington Court is just off the A39 and set in beautiful Devon countryside. It is the home of the famous Chichester family and has been beautifully kept.
You walk through the grounds to the front door and have to ring to be allowed in as though you were a personal visitor. On some weekends the staff dress in Victorian dress and the door will be opened by a maid. There are events throughout the year so it is worth checking to see what may be on.
The house is full with collections and memorabilia beautifully displayed with comprehensive written guides in each room. It is a big house and there is a lot to see.
There is also a carriage museum which is extensive and includes some very special state ones. The stables are used and demonstrations of harnessing and training carriage horses is given with a special chance for children to get close to the horses. There are limited carriage rides around the grounds. You should check when these take place if you would like to experience this.
There is a wide range of walks through the extensive park some of which is laid out to beautiful, mature flowering shrubs and some open to wildlife. A bat roost can be viewed in an outhouse with a bat cam enabling you to zoom in close to watch the behaviour.
There is a large, well stocked tea room and tables outside & a shop.
Seasonal events are on throughout the year so it is well worth checking their website. Also special events for children. You can also download a free guide here to take with you.

The usual high standard from the National trust with quizzes and half term activities to keep the children amused and some variety on the usual history theme with the carriage collection amd the bats.

Had a great time at this national trust property, the carriage museum is well worth a look round. When i went a few years ago there was also a farmers market during the summer.
