“Well appointed and very well run”
Reviewed September 7, 2012

Recently refurbished by the Brend Group, this hotel is very well run indeed by young, well-trained and extremely helpful staff. Our room (305) was not the largest we've ever stayed in, but it was fresh and comfortable and very reasonably priced. It even has a portable air-conditioning unit, though we didn't need to use it. There is a fast, modern lift. The room overlooked the town's main street, and one night (of three) we were kept awake by noisy boozers in a bar opposite. We mentioned this to the management the next day and they clearly had a word with these neighbours, for we never heard another peep thereafter. Car parking was a bit awkward at first, but became much easier when we were given access to the hotel's lock-up garage, where we were also able to store our folding bikes, saving us having to keep reassembling them in order to ride the wonderful Tarka Trail nearby (the purpose of our visit.) Breakfasts were excellent, as was the lunchtime carvery. We will very probably stay at the hotel again. It's a good place to be.

An hotel of good quality regarding the location, the amenities and the cleanliness. You only have to make sure of the price with them since we were asked for £89 a night breakfast incl.(arrival on sunday afternoon with no booking and no choice ...) whereas the brochure on the lobbies mentionned £70 for a traditional double room plus full English breakfast at £12.
The English breakfast was okay.

This hotel enjoys a very convenient central location in Barnstaple with shops and eateries right on its doorstep. We only booked in for one night but enjoyed a very pleasant stay. Room 403, classed as a mews room at the rear of the hotel, was clean, comfortable and well equipped. Only gripe would be that the room was a little tight on space which didn't bother us for a one night, but may have if there for longer.
Car parking can be difficult to find so would suggest studying a street plan en route or trusting a sat nav as we did.
All in all a good hotel in an excellent location.

Room Tip: Do some homeworrk before arrival if planning to use their car park.

I stayed here for 1 night during a quick visit for work reasons. The hotel is a little difficult to find unless you are on foot and then we fell upon it. We were on foot to begin with so no probs there and the kind receptionist advised us of how to get to the car park- good job as you would have never been able to. The car park is very small so large cars beware it can be very tight to get in and out of. Room was pleasently furnished and of a good temperature. It was nothing special but clean and comfortable with everything you needed. Bathroom was a little basic and cold but again this reflects in the price and the age of the hotel. It had tea and coffee making facilites and a nice flat screen tv. The guest areas are nicely furnished and clean and welcoming. It definatly caters for an older age group but at least that means you get a good nights sleep. Breakfast was lovely and plenty of it. Overall I felt we had really good value for money and if I needed to stay in a hotel in Barnstaple again would definalty pick this one.

This was our 3rd stay at a Brend Hotel and it is clear that the Brend family put a lot of effort in maintaining high standards. All staff were polite, friendly and efficient.
The Royal & Fortescue which has recently been refurbished has a pleasant old world ambience.

The advantage of old hotels is that they have character. However, the disadvantage is that they generally have a huge diversity of sizes and standards of bedrooms. Ours was a late booking and as a result I feel that we drew the short straw on the lower end of the diversity scale.

Room 117 is a double room on the 1st floor. It was clear from the pervading smell of paint that the room had recently been refurbished and although well appointed the room is small. There was little natural light, the reason for which becomes clear when you look out the window. The view is absolutely dour (see photo) you are greeted with a grey leaded roof, a grey ladder and huge amounts of grey ventilation.
The bathroom is of a reasonable size and again well appointed, but there lurking in the corner was the ‘moaning groaning macerator’ (see photo). For those of you with a delicate disposition I will not go into the intricacies, but sufficient to say it deals with toilet effluent and moans and groans as it does so. By a day a slight irritation, by night a definite sleep interrupter. It even had the audacity to moan and groan as I had a shower.
Then there is the ‘Dawn Chorus’. Room 117 is near the lift and next to ‘Chambermaid Control’ which comes to life a 07:45. Then at 08:00 the extractor fans outside the window start to hum. Fortunately, management has locked the bedroom window to protect Room 117 from sharing what is being cooked in the galley at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Would I recommend I recommend the Brend Royal & Fortescue Hotel, yes I would. Would I recommend Room 117, what do you think?

Finding the hotel car park is not easy and it should be noted that leisure facilities are a 1.7 mile drive away.

Eating Out. Barnstaple has a limited number of good restaurants and on a Sunday night most of them are closed.

Room Tip: Ask to see room. But if the hotel is full then 'what you see is what you get'.

I had to phone the hotel for directions as it was a bit of a nightmare to find, but the receptionist was very helpful and directed us in, and had the porter waiting for us to be let into the garage!!! It was very busy and had to block cars in, but they do ask for you leave your keys so that if anyone did need to get out, someone can move your car for you, so no need to worry of being disturbed. On check in the receptionists were cheery and helpful. We had two rooms booked, one of them wasn't quite ready, abit disappointing, as my mother was rather tired, but were offered complimentary tea or coffee in the lounge, while the porter carried our bags up to the room. The rooms were lovely and comfortable, and had recently been refurbished to a good standard. The food was most enjoyable, compliments to the chef. All i can say is the staff are an asset to this hotel, and most certainly cannot do enough for you. We will be back, Thankyou.

What a fab hotel. The room was lovely and clean. The staff were so friendly and went the extra mile. In particular the lady sweeping the front after a saturday night ! We had the carvery which was lovely. Unfortunately I am a smoker and was not keen on standing at the hotel front street. Other people complained as well. But that's down to me really ! Although it would be nice to have a seating area at the back. I have recommended the hotel already and would consider other hotels in the chain if they were this good

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet one at the back at a weekend
