“Hotel 'Yes' - Room 117 'No'”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2012

This was our 3rd stay at a Brend Hotel and it is clear that the Brend family put a lot of effort in maintaining high standards. All staff were polite, friendly and efficient.
The Royal & Fortescue which has recently been refurbished has a pleasant old world ambience.

The advantage of old hotels is that they have character. However, the disadvantage is that they generally have a huge diversity of sizes and standards of bedrooms. Ours was a late booking and as a result I feel that we drew the short straw on the lower end of the diversity scale.

Room 117 is a double room on the 1st floor. It was clear from the pervading smell of paint that the room had recently been refurbished and although well appointed the room is small. There was little natural light, the reason for which becomes clear when you look out the window. The view is absolutely dour (see photo) you are greeted with a grey leaded roof, a grey ladder and huge amounts of grey ventilation.
The bathroom is of a reasonable size and again well appointed, but there lurking in the corner was the ‘moaning groaning macerator’ (see photo). For those of you with a delicate disposition I will not go into the intricacies, but sufficient to say it deals with toilet effluent and moans and groans as it does so. By a day a slight irritation, by night a definite sleep interrupter. It even had the audacity to moan and groan as I had a shower.
Then there is the ‘Dawn Chorus’. Room 117 is near the lift and next to ‘Chambermaid Control’ which comes to life a 07:45. Then at 08:00 the extractor fans outside the window start to hum. Fortunately, management has locked the bedroom window to protect Room 117 from sharing what is being cooked in the galley at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Would I recommend I recommend the Brend Royal & Fortescue Hotel, yes I would. Would I recommend Room 117, what do you think?

Finding the hotel car park is not easy and it should be noted that leisure facilities are a 1.7 mile drive away.

Eating Out. Barnstaple has a limited number of good restaurants and on a Sunday night most of them are closed.

Room Tip: Ask to see room. But if the hotel is full then 'what you see is what you get'.

I had to phone the hotel for directions as it was a bit of a nightmare to find, but the receptionist was very helpful and directed us in, and had the porter waiting for us to be let into the garage!!! It was very busy and had to block cars in, but they do ask for you leave your keys so that if anyone did need to get out, someone can move your car for you, so no need to worry of being disturbed. On check in the receptionists were cheery and helpful. We had two rooms booked, one of them wasn't quite ready, abit disappointing, as my mother was rather tired, but were offered complimentary tea or coffee in the lounge, while the porter carried our bags up to the room. The rooms were lovely and comfortable, and had recently been refurbished to a good standard. The food was most enjoyable, compliments to the chef. All i can say is the staff are an asset to this hotel, and most certainly cannot do enough for you. We will be back, Thankyou.

What a fab hotel. The room was lovely and clean. The staff were so friendly and went the extra mile. In particular the lady sweeping the front after a saturday night ! We had the carvery which was lovely. Unfortunately I am a smoker and was not keen on standing at the hotel front street. Other people complained as well. But that's down to me really ! Although it would be nice to have a seating area at the back. I have recommended the hotel already and would consider other hotels in the chain if they were this good

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet one at the back at a weekend

We booked one night B+B as we were meeting relatives. We arrived at 3.45pm (check in at 3pm), we could not find the car park and when we did it was full, so waited until someone moved, later we were blocked in, so had to be picked up for dinner. On arrival we were given the key and after a 4.5hr journey went to the room to find them still cleaning it; I went down to be advised to sit in the lounge and order tea/coffee which would be charged to my room! Not best pleased with that comment, i aksed to them to see how long it would be and they said 15 more mins, so I asked for a room that was ready as check out is 11am. They gave us another room - small but nicely decorated BUT someone had smoked a lot in it, the small bathroom though clean really smelt badly and i informed them that the shower curtain esp stank to make my stomach turn. When w got back form dinner they had left the window wide open and bathroom door wide open, no message or even change of shower curtain. Room was very hot overnight but couldn't keep the window open as an extractor fan outside was v loud. Highlight was a very delicious and well cooked breakfast... I would like to return but they really need to sort out what to do when things go wrong, on check out we heard two more couples asking to change rooms. It could be so good as it is pefectly placed in the centre of town.

Room Tip: no tips, but room 111 was not the best!

Stayed at this hotel for 7 nights in July. Ideal location in town centre. Good room, good food, excellent service and friendly staff. What more can you ask for. Would recommend the carvery in the hotel and excellent food in the adjoining bistro. Free parking at the hotel is a bonus, although limited spaces we managed to park every day without problem. £100 a night for a double superior room worth every penny and wouldn't hesitate to return.

Secure parking for both cars and bikes, welcoming and helpful staff. The dining rooms was somewhat disorganised. Breakfast buffet disappointing with very 'ordinary' offerings. Staff don't seem to communicate so long waits for coffee, toast whatever. Scrambled egg was more of a milk jelly as too much milk been added. Overall a reasonable stay. Just needs a wave of the magic wand to give some missing 'sparkle'. As things are it is OK.
