Unexpectedly excellent visit on a stormy day in February with friends and not many options! Proved a inspired choice as…..
à: it was free
b: it was beautifully done
c: the cafe was super
d: parking was free for 3 hours

Well thought out and thought provoking museum which also provided an insight of the social history and evolution of Barrow and the Furness peninsula. Something for young and old alike. Take time to enjoy the glass window in the cafe!!!!

This is a well designed and very interesting museum with a good cafe so provided an excellent wet day activity. The social history is fascinating even if you have no association with the area and there arte wonderful models of ships as well as old photos and other artefacts. I think that children would really enjoy a visit and there are special activity sheets for them. We were 3 adults and greatly enjoyed our visit.
The short films were well made and interesting ( we watched 4)
Best of all it is free ( donation box)
We were in about 2 hours inc lunch but could have spent longer.

we visited today with 4 children while we were staying in the area. not a great lot to do with smaller children but my girls did enjoy the dressing up corner. there is a nice park outside so think would be lovely on a warmer day. free entry so worth a look if in the area.

This Museum does much to explain the interesting history of Barrow - it was in effect a Victorian 'new town'. Apart from the museum itself there are some very well-made videos about various aspects of the area.
Very well worth visiting if you are in Barrow. It also has a comfortable Coffee Shop with good service and a selection of tasty cakes,
