I was here over new year (but not New Year's Eve). The place was relatively quiet - very large on the inside as it goes back a long way. We only stayed for a couple of drinks but the staff were pleasant enough.

Only place showing the England game so went and had a few beers and food, amazing how miserable staff can bring a place down but they were all really unhappy to be busy, serving and it was hard to get one to take an order! Still England beat the Aussies

We went into the hotel about 11.45am and were pleased to find that it was open, allowed dogs and started serving lunch at 12pm. The open fire was roaring away, it was lovely and warm and the barman was great. We got our drinks and sat by the fire to study the menus whilst the barman finished preparing the bar area.
Now this is where it turned scary. An exceptionally grubby looking man in a very dirty jacket shuffled from a doorway on my left, in a hammer house of horror manner, and made his way through the bar. A couple of minutes later I saw the man returning and realised his jacket was actually a chef's 'white'. This time my husband also saw him. Both him and his clothing appeared frighteningly filthy. Me and my hubby looked at each other wide eyed and open mouthed. I then asked the barman whether the man was the chef - he confirmed he was. Needless to say we returned the menus. We finished our drinks at break- neck speed and walked.
Now this is a real shame because the beer was good, the barman lovely (he even brought a bowl of water for our dog), the fire was cosy and the menu more than adequate. We have no idea what the management is thinking allowing a person in such an unhygienic condition anywhere on the premises - let alone near food. Is he just not supposed to be seen by customers? Is he usually kept securely behind closed kitchen doors after the clock strikes twelve? We will happily never find out as we will not be back.
