“Good choice”
Reviewed May 25, 2009

Overall a good stay. Excellent location, friendly staff, clean room and good breakfast. Room a little on the small size and bed not the comfiest! Could probably get a better quality hotel for same price but Oakbank a reliable choice. Have stayed there before and would do again.

Stayed here for one night on Saturday as it was the only place in Bowness that would offer 1 night at a weekend. The location is great, really convenient for Bowness, the shops, pubs and lake etc, but the hotel itself just left me feeling cold. There is no atmosphere in the place and no real service from the staff who all act as if they just work there and couldn't care less if you had a nice stay, needed anything else or would ever like to return. Breakfast was between 8.30 and 9.15, even on a Sunday - Criminal! So everyone shuffled in and sat in silence, it was that sort of place. If you are looking for a homely atmosphere with staff who care, then don't stay here. If you are looking for a Premier Travel Inn, but are willing to pay double, then this is the place for you. Mind you, the bathrooms a Travel Inns are about 4 times the size. If you sat on the loo in our en-suite, you burned your knees on the towel heater opposite. One last thing, our room (Room 1) was next to the main entrance, so we heard everyone coming in and out, and the staff telling them about the dining room, what time breakfast was etc. Great.

Excellently placed for the shops and eateries of Bowness also for the boats up, down and around Windermere. The staff were very friendly and helpful. To call the room superior was stretching credulity a bit. it was long overdue for decorating, wallpaper was lifting in a number of places and there was a hole in the ceiling between the bedroom and bathroom. The narrow sofa type chair (see first picture on rooms page of hotel website) has perhaps been commented on before as we were invited on arrival to bring another chair in from the landing if required and it was. Parking can be a bit tight too in a lot of the spaces. The complimentary sherry was a nice touch but I would have swapped it for some decaf coffee in the room any time.

I have just stayed at this hotel for the weekend, with my partner and some of our friends. On arrival at The Oakbank House Hotel we were warmly greeted by Margeret and shown to our room. The room was spotlessly clean and had a very 'new' feel to it, and although not in a superior room (i booked standard rooms) with a lake view, the view was still equally as picturesque. TV and tea and coffee making facilities included in room with extra supplies kept in a basket if required on the landing of each storey.

The location of this hotel could not be better, there is a pub called the Angel Inn situated directly opposite so is an ideal start to your evening or just to nip over for a couple of drinks!! There is also a large variety of shops, bars and restaurants within literally a two minute walk from hotel, and it is a 5 minute walk down to the lake.

The breakfasts at this hotel are beautiful, just what you need to set you up nicely for the day ahead! The only thing i would say is, if the hotel is full, as it seemed to be this weekend, that because breakfast is only served over a short time range (08:30 - 09:15) you find that everybody turns up for breakfast at the same time and therefore everyone is left wanting their food at the same time! The breakfast room felt a little crowded, but this is only a minor criticism.
I also did find that i had to keep asking for toast and butter, as there were 4 of us at the table and only one rack of toast (a little on the stingy side) and there seemed a little bit of reluctance to give my partner an extra sausage but in all fairness if you insist then you will get!! - Paying customers should not be made to feel guilty about wanting extra food though, and we did feel slightly uncomfortable.

I would recommend this hotel to anybody it really is a lovely experience, and we will definately be going back.

This is a very well located guest house in the heart of bowness, having views of the lake. The place is spotless, comfortable and friendly. Has a large car park and is within walking distance of the lake. You are able to use the swimming pool, sauna and jaccuzzi of another hotel only 50 yards away, by using the guest house membership.

On the lakeside there is a large public house which serves an all day, help yourself carvery for a mere £3.95p per person which is excellent in taste and quality. The drinks are also very cheap.

On arriving at the hotel there were no other cars in the car ark, but the spaces were very small and at funny angles - not a great problem though.

The welcome we got was quite indifferent, I think this was because we had arrived earlier than expected and I was made to feel a little guity abot this.

We were staying in a superior double which as a good size, but decor was very dated and bathroom was disapointing with a very weak shower.

The upsides of the property were the great location and stunning views from our room and public areas. The breakfast was also good with a good choice and generous portions.

Given the above this was an OK place to stay.
