The White House Hotel
Reviewed October 31, 2012

Just got back from a 2 night stay at The White Lodge. Had a room in the annexe which wasn't amazing. The bedroom itself was clean and well kept however there were just a long list of issues. The bathroom smelt of drains on the first day and night to the point where it was quite unbearable. We went to speak to someone in the main building and weren't really offered any solutions (the only option given was to move to a room in main building which wouldnt be made up and in the words of the staff not as nice as the one we were in). A drink was offered to us however we ended up leaving it and putting up with it. The next day they cleaned it and used drain unblocker and it did improve. Additionally another room became available for us to move if wanted to.
Bathroom bit grubby, shower had mould, both bedside lights didnt have bulbs, toilet roll was stuffed into holes in the bathroom ceiling, no wifi as the annex is too far away from main building routers. Breakfast ok but the whole place just needs a bit of looking after. Car parking is a nightmare- the one near hotel took 20 mins to wait for a space and then cost 12 pounds for 9 hours. The owner directed us to residential streets about 5 minute walk away for the rest of the stay.
Basically for the money (minus the smell) its an ok place to stay but we left disappointed.

Had stayed there before under previous ownership. We were a bit disappointed. The owner John had his working desk on a table in the bar. We had a room in the annex, the toilette seat was cracked and when I mentioned it on checkout John said he knew. Since the hotel had plenty of unoccupied rooms, iI was a fed up that he had knowingly put us in that one. The hotel is centrally located, the last time we stayed the hotel gave us voucher so that we could use the public car park free. This is not available now which means you have to be at the car park at 8am to get a ticket.

Evening meal was OK but not great. In hindsight I would have gone to the Italian up the road.

The waitress at breakfast said they hadn't got a menu, I had to point out that there was one displayed on the door. There was a good choice however it was a long time arriving . I think I saw one of the staff go out and buy the food from Tesco. The breakfast wasn't very good and the bread used for the toast was really cheap and nasty.

I like to stay in hotels with a bit of character, in this case I would have preferred a Premier Inn

Really pleasant stay. Lovely room and great food in the restaurant. 2 mins to waterfront, shops and bars. Would definitely stay again.
Would also recommend Masons Arms at Cartmel Fell for evening meal

Invited by friends for a meal and drinks at the Whitehouse Hotel in the old village part of Bowness on Windermere at the end of August. The food was good (as was the wine)! however the service and presentation was excellent! Outstanding in fact. The sort of thing one would normally associate with top goumet establishments.
Cant recommend this place highly enough! Well done!!

Booked the hotel by ringing the Hotel direct as opposed to website, as website booking regulations stipulated 2 night minimum stay, and as we only wanted one night, John was happy to oblige.
Have to say we were surprised there was no parking facilities, and as a result we had to pay for x2 days parking on a nearby public car park which came to £13.00.
That said, the rest of our stay was fine, the check in was quick and efficient, the room was lovely and clean, and the bed was really comfy. The bathroom was modern, clean and the shower was a good one.
The breakfast was the best of all, with good choice and excellent quick service.
For £85 for a Saturday in Bowness, we think it was a good choice, and we would be happy to recommend this hotel to our friends without fear of it letting us down.

Stayed here 31st Aug and 1st Sept, in the Annexe Churchills. Room was lovely and clean and an ideal location, 3min walk to lake to board cruise and 2mins from shops and bars. Room had a view overlooking Royal Yacht Windermere club and you could also see the lake. Breakfast was really nice and lots of choice. Staff all very friendly. We parked at the top of the town on a residential street for free (about 5mins walk from hotel).

Recently took my mum for a birthday treat -We stayed in the Annexe which was apart from the main building, the room was lovely with really comfy beds and a very short walk from the lake.

The breakfast was amazing, (and you certainly got enough!) and the staff were always very helpful and couldn't do enough

I will be returning with my other half !

Thanks John we had a fab time !
