Windermere Hydro Hotel
Reviewed August 13, 2010

On a coach trip,we had 154 and friends had 155 stay away from these rooms whilst our room was better the bed cover was dirty and we put it out of the way,the bed linen was clean and the room was tidy, but on lifting a chair to move it the arms fell OFF.The room our friends stayed in had a wet patch on the floor which the staff tried to clean, but it was still wet 4 days later, they had only 1 chair that was completely useless some of the other rooms were better. For us the entertainment was bad others may have liked it.
On the plus side the food was good the sevice good staff good, public areas OK but dated.Perhaps the management put coach parties in the poorest rooms but they are the bread and butter for this type of hotel.By the way friends taking the matter further with photos of their nightmare

Our room was nice with a comfy bed, plenty of pillows, tea & coffee, toiletries in the bathroom, however our friends room in the attic was rather bijou! Food was good with a variety of choice. Fab desserts and plentiful breakfast which we all enjoyed! The hill up to the hotel is rather steep so not suitable for walking back up from Bowness if you are elderly/unfit or wearing high heels! Staff were helpful and service was good. The bar was quiet but we made our own fun anyway! We didn't have time for a swim but the pool looked inviting. All in all a pleasant stay and a good base for exploring the area.

This place certainly has a faded charm to it. It sort of reminded me of the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubric's 'The Shining'.....in a good way. The decor is certainly a little dated, as other posters have mentioned and the weird ragtime music piped around the communal areas of the building were a little surreal and creepy. However, the staff were friendly and the hotel was very clean. The buffet breakfast was quite good and there was plenty of it, although it has to be said that it was all a bit dried out on the bain maries, especially the fried eggs. Don't bother with the rather souless bar; there are much better drinking holes a short walk away in Bowness town centre.

Myself and my husband were due to stay at the the oak bank but they had overbooked, so they transfered our booking to the hydro. The hotel is old but lovely, the staff were all very nice and the room was very clean. We would go again hopefully next time with our children.

Reaching by train we had to ask at least four locals to find the hotel. 10 minutes ride by bus no. 599 with 20 mins. frequency. 5 mins walk from the bustop. No indicators on the roads leading to the hotel. Fantastic view of the lake from the hotel. Not enough choice in breakfast. Only one dish for vegetarians in the dinner menu. Receptionist helpful and friendly and helped us in the local siteseeing.
We booked for two days but stayed only for one. less than 24hrs notice given so no refund, understandable , but wanted us to vacate room by 10.30 to clean up and offered to store our luggage elsewhere, that is being mean. The pier is walking distance from the hotel. Dotted with shops along the way including a supermarket.
Room big enough, but tiny bathroom. Complimentary toileteries in sachets, bed lumpy, gives a feel that austerity measures are on.

The Hydro Hotel Bowness on windermere, is the worst hotel I have ever stepped foot in. It looks like a residential care home, with old ugly furniture, old fashioned and tired interiors, dirty reception area, teamed with staff that are un-trained and un-professional. It is situated on top of hill which you will need your trainers or hiking boots to climb...Girls no heels, you'll kill yourself....Useless for older people as they have no chance of ever leaving the property, as the climb will probably lead to cardiac arrests.
The hotel 'Spa' which plays a predominant part of the hotels advertising, was closed...whirl pool broke and surrounded by road work bollards, freezing cold pool, and a sauna which was turned off...so take your towel and swim wear in case you get lucky enough with the weather you can go swim in the lake....
WARNING WARNING WARNING!!!! We also had money charged from our account without authorisation, and when we try to contact the hotel the manager refuses to take our telephone calls. So please don't secure your booking with a credit/debit card as the manager is likely to go on a shopping spree at your behalf.
However i would highly recommend the Royal Oak in the centre of town, good crowd nice rooms, and value for money.

I stayed for 3 nights in this wonderful historic hotel (originally a windermere bath house). It had large rooms and spacious corridors with many original features. The rooms were exceptionally clean and modernised with tv, drink making facilities, trouser press and hairdryer, along with all one would need to shower and wash hair or keep it dry with the shower cap. The furnishings were more than ample to take every item of clothing even if I had come for a month and the bedding was clean and well laundered and curtains were good quality and heavy duty, which blocked out any light. The bed was extremely comfortable and the view of the lake outstanding at any time of the day. The staff were courteous and extremely helpful at all times. The rooms were made up everyday with clean towels and the room was topped up with anything that had been used. The breakfast buffet consisted of food fit for royalty and the choice was unbelievable. I found nothing to complain about, oh maybe a few floorboards creaked and the paintwork had a few chips missing, hey but so would we all if we were that old. I can highly recommend this hotel if you want a building of character with excellent cleanliness and food ( and believe me I am hard to please). The swimming pool and other facilites were not used by me this time but those who had used it spoke highly of the facilities, I plan to try these out on my next visit.. Oh yes I plan to return.
