Windermere Hydro Hotel

Staff friendly and efficient. Decor and furnishings need updating. Our bedroom looked very old fashioned but did seem to have been refurbished. But the drapes and bedspread were very heavy and very dated. Absolutely fantastic bathroom. Very modern, bright and beautifully designed. But the hot water in the shower didn't actually get beyond tepid and, after being out in the cold outdoors all day, I really do want a hot shower! Also there is no light over the mirror and I found it difficult to see to put my make-up on at night. Similarly the mirror over the dressing table was unlit and too far away to be of any use! Breakfast just alright. Self-service and sufficient. Evening meal wasn't as delicious as the menu suggested. Rather disappointing on the whole. As there were only about 6 tables occupied there was little atmosphere and it was difficult to hold a private conversation. Swimming pool small and in a separate building. Even with 4 people using it it looked crowded. Lots of rooms with comfy sofas and chairs but many needed reupholstering and some appeared stained. Probably very tasteful when first decorated but sorely needs a revamp. Although there were fires burning to cheer the rooms the hotel was cold and we went to our room early rather than lingering in the bar as we felt chilly. I think that he g hotel would benefit from a total refurbishment. This may have already started as the bathroom suggests. Continue the modernisation and the hotel would be much more attractive and welcoming.

Room Tip: We were fortunate in being allocated a room at he front of the hotel and had a beautiful view of Win...

This was our first visit to the Hydro, staying for the Cumbria Bridge Congress. The hotel is huge, with many different seating areas to relax in. Our room was large, clean and well presented. All the staff were very helpful, especially reception, who arranged a check in time early to allow my wife (a none bridge player) to relax in the room. Breakfast is buffet style with a great choice. The 4 course evening meal was superb with an extensive menu , although we found the portions over-generous. The sweet course was buffet style, enabling you to have as much or as little as you like. The hotel and room decor has been reviewed as "dated" but we did not see any problem. The hotel is situated 80 yards from Bowness town centre and has a massive car park which is a tremendous asset in this busy tourist town. We will certainly stay again.

We stayed here for two nights on a KGB deal, as we do at many places. First impressions on walking in were not 'wow.' The interior seemed dour and dated. The bar and lounge has comfortable settees where you can just relax with a book or a drink.

The room, well, not what we expected. Room 54 is bigger than usual and has a separate sitting area. It is clean and warm with a lake view. The decorating however is dated - someone will probably say it was only done last year!

The food is good and presented better than average with good service. Breakfast is buffet service and good. I am a sad person in that my overriding criteria anywhere, is the food and service - The Hydro scored on both these counts. By the second day The Hydro was growing on me. Its ' 50's decorating style has a sort of quirky style. We spent lunchtime onwards relaxing in the lounge with a few drinks ( the bar menu is also good.)

So, Th Hydro grew on me; we had a relaxing time ( which is what we went for.) The food was good and the room good.

The hotel is clean and so what if the decorating style is a little dated. Neither of us really go for modern Hotels, we like atmosphere and style no matter in what form it comes.

We've been coming here for years now on event run by Scouts annually and normally take over the entire hotel.
This is the first year that I've put a report on here though as I felt the service received was excellent and worthy of mention.
We had two rooms for our family with two kids in wheelchairs and got 86 and 87 which had twin beds, not the perfect option for us as there was no adjoining door but it suited us fine for the weekend and the size of the rooms and no steps or lift required was a real help.
The food, as always was excellent. It must say something when the Chef is still there after many years. You can tell that this is not one of those hotels where the food is bought in from a huge supplier like Brakes (Although Brakes food is excellent). All the meals were cooked from scratch using fresh ingredients and very tasty too.
The one area they have struggled with in previous years is around their Yorkshire puddings, again, made from scratch and previously burnt or undercooked. This year, they were perfect.
The place was lovely and warm and the log fires were a bonus on a cold weekend.
The service from the staff was first class, our two boys were looked after very well and we always had a reserved table for us where there was plenty of room and we were not in the way.

It isn't a cheap weekend when we come here although the bar prices were good value but a bit of pampering and luxury is worth it once in a while and we look forward to returning again and again and again.

Room Tip: Rooms 86 and 87 are disabled accessible with wet rooms and twin beds

We were in a party of some 130 Scouters who enjoy a social weekend at the Hydro every year. The accommodation was comfortable and clean. The food was plentiful and tasty and the staff were always both helpful and cheerful. The views from the hotel over the lake are excellent (weather permitting). It is an old building, full of charm and not like many of the new "euro" hotels. All in all a great place for a large party to enjoy itself.

Room Tip: There are a number of large rooms at the front of the hotel. Some rooms at the back are only access...

Lovely hotel located right on the Lake. The staff were friendly and attentive and the rooms were spacious and clean.

The spa was quirky but lovely.

The food was divine- the sticky toffee pudding has changed my life!!

Breakfast was excellent, with plenty of choice.

I would most certainly go back. Excellent value.

(Booked with KGB deal).

Once again I was a member of a party taking a New Year coach trip at this hotel - independant travelers may find different. I felt the standard was slightly lower than last year but still very high. The staff were as previously always friendly and helpful and the food good.

Those who prefer the sort of international or motor lodge, where you have no indication which town you are in may no like it, but if like me you want an interesting, individual, friendly hotel with quirks - this could be the place for you. Do explore the whole hotel, find the games room and play snooker, tabletennis or other games like dominoes. The swimming is good though you have to walk outside, if you expect to do this take your own swimming towel.

Room Tip: See above - find the games room and take your own swimming towel
