The Burn How Garden House Hotel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 7, 2012

We had met up with friends for lunch at Lindeth Howe. That was very good indeed. We decided to have a night in the Lake District, fancied a change, and noted the good reviews of Burn How. We called, and managed to get the internet rate, but no lower! This is more a motel than a hotel. The rooms are scattered about the lovely gardens. The rooms all seem to be of good size. I have often found hotels of this type to be a bit cold and musty. This was not so. The room was large, with a super modern bathroom. The carpet and decor were a bit tired, but the heating was pewerful and the lighting was much brighter than the average hotel. The bed was very comfortable. We only wanted a light dinner, and were surprised how empty it was with only one more table occupied even though the hotel was almost full. . I think this is due to the superb situation so close to Bowness that there is a massive choice of restaurants for eating out. The food wasgood but not multiple rosette standard so common in this area.

Walking back to the room in the rain was the only downside. All the reports said that the breakfast was the highlight, and so it proved. Seldom does one get such a splendid selection of fresh fruit at a hotel in this country. Seldom is there such a good choice of cooked breakfast items. The staff were universally nice friendly and helpful. It is hard to rate value. For example we found Linthwaite House to be absolutely superb, but even at a discount rate it was double the price of Burn How. Maybe 4 dots on an absolute level, but considring the price it just makes a 5. So would we go again, indeed yes.

Room Tip: We had what was available, it was OK!.

lovely staff very welcoming. excellent breakfast. ideally located for lake and surrounding area. only complaint, the old guy at breakfast wa a little off putting with his remarks when we picked up a news paper on the bar to read, we did not ralise it was for another guest, no problem apart from his remark, "..... they sell them in the news agents" no need for such remarks. would still stay here again. we stayed in the lodge house,

After a day cycling with the family we took the ferry across Windermere which takes you to within 2 minutes drive of hotel. Welcome was warm, room was spacious, even with four beds, room for all are mucky shoes and coats and loads of hot water for all our showers. Only 5 minute walk into Bowness with loads of restaurants and pubs. Breakfast was excellent and our boys will now only stop in places with the breakfast award!

Set in spectacular setting , this is a gem . We stayed in a family room with a garden view , it was modern , spacious and well appointed . number 1 which is ideal near to reception & the dining room . Breakfast here is setting the standard very high , the last time i had something close to this , iwas in the four seasons in Florence paying an awful lot more. If you are looking for a quality B&B look no further . Keep up the good work .

Warm welcome and good service from all the staff. Super breakfast, cooked to order, and good dinner menu. Superior Rose Garden room a good size, very good sized bed. Furniture a little dated, and the accommodation block was rather motel style. The grounds were pleasant, close enough to Bowness to walk in but not too close to be noisy. Parking a bit tight for the bigger car.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms have easier access

Thank you for your feedback on your stay with us, we have taken on board your comments about the tight car parking space, although we have numbered spaces we can arrange for guests to park their cars in a different area if necessary. We are pleased that your breakfast was enjoyed and set you up for the day. Our accommodation is set in the gardens away from the main building, and we do have various different types of rooms, from a Victorian house, to a block of rooms in the rose garden area, and garden chalet rooms running down the drive. Yes and all just a five minute walk from the village. We hope we can welcome you back to try out another of our rooms in the future.

Our fourth time at Burn How and it certainly will not be the last. We stayed in a first floor garden room (number 16) with a balcony overlooking the wonderful gardens, Sadly the weather was quite bad and we did not get to go out on the balcony, on previous sunny visits the balcony was very a pleasant and private place to sit. The room was very spacious, well furnished, very clean with a very comfortable four poster bed.
The bathroom was large but unfortunately gave rise to the only, but very serious and dangerous complaint. The shower was a fixture over the bath but was very difficult to get out of without falling. The bath became suite slippery then when you tried to get out there was absolutely nothing to hold on to, no hand rails of any kind. It could have been lethal and the hotel need to sort it before they get sued by a guest for broken bones or worse.
The room gave rise to the other problem, we were able to lay in bed with the TV on without sound as we could hear every single word from the TV in the next room.
In spite of the above we would still return, if nothing else for the breakfast which the hotel has been given awards for. It was scrumptious and so much choice, the array of fresh fruit was amazing. Dinner was equally as good with the chef willing and able to accommodate our little requests. The dining room is warm and quite intimate, the tables in the windows enable you to view a wide range of birds at the garden feeders while you are dining.
Hopefully the hotel will correct the safety problem in the bathroom, when we want to return we will certainly check that there are handrails in the room we book. That aside it is a really lovely relaxing place to stay with a wonderful team of staff.

Room Tip: We have stayed in three different rooms but room 16 is the best (if they put hand rails in)

It is nice to know that on your return you are trying out the various rooms types that we have in the hotel, and that you had enjoyed your meals, we have passed on your comments to the chef.
We have noted your comments concerning the bathroom, along with the suctioned shower mats for the baths which we have in the bathrooms, we also have portable hand rails that we can put into rooms if guests feel they need them, as it is not always easy to know where to position these in some rooms for different guest requirements.

Booked the previous evening, we arrived at the Hotel to be greeted by a pleasant and helpful receptionist who showed us to our Rose Garden room. The room was unusually large for a hotel with a super king sized bed (very comfy) and what looked like new curtains and bedding. Bathroom was spotlessly clean and very warm and toasty! We also had a balcony with a view of the garden.

After a good nights sleep in the very comfy bed, breakfast was a treat. A wonderful selection of fresh fruits, cereals and yoghurt's followed by a tasty cooked breakfast. They even had my favourite strawberry and mango tea!

Unlike many bed and breakfasts, the time for breakfast was up to 10.am and we didn't feel at all rushed to vacate our room.

On checkout, we were also handed a voucher for a percentage of the next visit which I will be using when time allows.

The hotel also has a small gym which we were not aware of when we booked and has the most beautiful grounds which you can view from the balcony. My only comment would be that the rooms, the garden or the gym facilities are not really promoted to their full potential on the website. This is an unusual case of the real thing being much better than the website!

Another bonus is that the hotel really is only a couple of minutes walk into town!

Room Tip: If you don't like open stairs ask for a ground floor room, and I believe not all rooms have king...

It was interesting reading your comments regarding the website and that the garden and gym were not promoted to their full potential,.
