“Very pleasant apart from piped music”
Reviewed November 23, 2006

Very pleasant location. Stayed in Lake View Deluxe 205, small but had all amenities tho view was from a raised area in room.
Generous breakfast, excellent food, restaurant seating very good. Bar and bar sitting room a bit dingy (the public areas of Miller Howe Hotel nicer). Staff friendly and helpful. Reservation manager had shades of Basil about her particularly when telephone booking. My only gripe, the loud piped music, even worse, repeated on a loop, specifically in the bar and restaurant which when quiet meant had to ask for it to be turned down. Check your bill, was charged for meal not taken, sorted amenably. Expensive but comfortable.

Having read the almost universally positive reviews on Tripadvisor I was convinced staying here would be a success, but we came away quite disappointed. Please take note of the advice given further below if booking, you will be grateful.

The hotel itself is clean and comfy, the food is top-notch. (They have 1 AA rosette for the food, they deserve 2). We enjoyed a lovely meal and retired to our room, which was when things started to go wrong. For a start the room was like a kiln, although earlier in the evening it was fine. It seemed a towel rail was on overload and could not be switched off. Far more concerning was that the room was actually SHAKING with the vibrations coming from beneath us (we were above the kitchen). When complaining to the lady manageress about this, she simply commented that it normally goes off by about 11pm. Wonderful! I made it clear that we wanted a room change, and the attitude shown was distinctly frosty. By pure good luck there was a twin room free which we gladly took, and thankfully had a decent night's sleep. I made a point of listening at the door of the original room next morning and the fans were on at least by 7:30. Hard cheese if you want a lie-in!

My key disappointment was the attitude of management, no hint of an apology, it was businesslike at best. And then it struck me why: because they are always having grumbles about this room.

We paid £204 for this night, and were allocated Room 118. To the management/owners: this room is a disgrace - how can you charge this kind of money for a room that is going to cause such aggro to your guests every night of the year? Until the problem is fixed, or the room is taken out of service some poor soul is going to face the same problem as us.

Next day we were presented with a bill that was £160 over what it should have been, and had to grumble yet again, with similar response. We were glad to get away by this stage.

By accident we had left some shirt-collar stiffeners in the room, amd only realised later. With little hope I rang to see if they had been handed in by the cleaning staff, needless to say they hadn't and once again there was the clear tone of 'why are you botheriing me with this rubbish' in the voice at the end of the line.

Obviously most people seem to like the place, and maybe we just were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but whatever else insist that you do NOT have room 118 if booking. You have been warned!
