Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Enjoy a serene day out at the most enchanting historic houses in the Lake District. When you visit you are invited to relax and immerse yourself in all the beauty and craftsmanship of Blackwell. We encourage you to sit and soak up the atmosphere in Blackwell’s fireplace inglenooks, which have fine examples of tiles by Arts & Crafts designer William de Morgan. The inviting window seats offer stunning views of the surrounding Lake District scenery. You can appreciate the house as it was originally intended, without roped-off areas. Blackwell retains many of its original decorative features, including a rare hessian wall-hanging in the Dining Room, leaf-shaped door handles, curious window catches, spectacular plasterwork, stained glass and carved wooden panelling by Simpsons of Kendal. The rooms contain furniture and objects by many of the leading Arts and Crafts designers and studios.

From the exemplary greeting from the lady on the desk to the beautifully presented arts and crafts house, via superb home cooked meals in the cafe and an excellent introductory talk in the great hall the day was a total delight.
We could not recall a more interesting visit in a relaxed atmosphere.
We will be back!

We could have spent all day here. This house has a very happy feel about it. My wife is very into the arts and crafts stuff and loved it. The cafe is very good and caters well for those who need to eat gluten free food. I enjoyed what I had to eat and only found out afterward it was gluten free. The manager was very enthusiastic about the food the produced. A highly recommended day our.

This is simply stunning. We have visited many much older 'great country houses' (which this certainly is not) and the utter beauty and originality of its Arts and Crafts design, quality of craftsmanship and its setting beats them all. The shop was wonderful, focused on original craft items rather than tacky souvenirs, and the staff delightful. The temporary Moorcroft exhibition was excellent too.

The gift shop and cafe are good and interesting enough to visit on their own, but the house is well worth a look - only takes about half an hour - but stay longer if it's your kind of thing: which may depend on the temporary exhibitions, so check their website first).

We really like Arts and Craft and Art Nouveau and have visited Wightwick Manor and Gardens, (West Midlands) on numerous occasions. We enjoyed the architecture of the house but were disappointed with the information at Blackwell and wished more of the rooms were furnished in keeping with the period. Being used to National Trust we missed having knowledgeable people available in the house to give background information. The Moorcraft exhibition is interesting.
