Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Enjoy a serene day out at the most enchanting historic houses in the Lake District. When you visit you are invited to relax and immerse yourself in all the beauty and craftsmanship of Blackwell. We encourage you to sit and soak up the atmosphere in Blackwell’s fireplace inglenooks, which have fine examples of tiles by Arts & Crafts designer William de Morgan. The inviting window seats offer stunning views of the surrounding Lake District scenery. You can appreciate the house as it was originally intended, without roped-off areas. Blackwell retains many of its original decorative features, including a rare hessian wall-hanging in the Dining Room, leaf-shaped door handles, curious window catches, spectacular plasterwork, stained glass and carved wooden panelling by Simpsons of Kendal. The rooms contain furniture and objects by many of the leading Arts and Crafts designers and studios.

This property is quite difficult to find. You need to follow the signs some of which are not clearly visible. We visited in November but it was still quite busy. Entry is around £7.00 but you can visit the house and gardens for this price. The décor is beautiful and the views from the individual windows are superb. There are exhibitions throughout the year so suggest you check web site to discover what joys you will be seeing The shop offers unusual gifts some rather pricey but they are very different .
The café is a dream with oodles of good freshly prepared food . Excellent lunches and the cakes are to die for you will not be disappointed.
For disabled visitors there is a lift but our friend found some of the rooms not that easy to access.

Blackwell has been sensitively restored to its former splendour. Overlooking Lake Windermere and set in acres of beautiful gardens, it is a glorious example of the best of its time. At first glance rather minimalist
in style, it is, in fact, rich in details that delight the eye, such as the handmade window catches - no two alike; furnishings and artefacts by great names like Dr Christopher Dresser and hand crafted metalwork from the Keswick School of Industrial Arts. There is a tranquil air and visitors are welcome to take time out to enjoy the wonderful views, whilst relaxing in one of a number of comfortable window seats. The upstairs rooms feature changing exhibitions of artwork and larger items are frequently displayed outside. There is an excellent tea room and a craft shop selling some good quality items at fair prices.

Having read so much about Baille Scott's House, we were not disappointed. It is a fine example of the Arts and Crafts Movement, designed from the inside out. Each room is a gem with windows and sitting areas designed so one can take advantage of the views with window seats and little snugs tucked away in corners. The result is that the outside can appear a bit random in its design, but it is the inside which works so well.

The original owner didn't furnish the house in the Arts and Crafts style so the Trust which runs it has had to import relevant furniture in most instances. However those pieces are interesting in their own right.

Perhaps those who were a bit disappointed should have spent more time reading about the house; they might have learned more and appreciated it more? We spent well over two hours there!

A beautiful house, lovingly restored to its former glory. Excellent explanatory leaflet, nice cafe and some lovely exhibits, mostly for purchase, if you are feeling flush!

Described as an arts and craft house, which it is but it looks like it's been burgled and re-opened as a modern art gallery or expensive craft shop
