Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Enjoy a serene day out at the most enchanting historic houses in the Lake District. When you visit you are invited to relax and immerse yourself in all the beauty and craftsmanship of Blackwell. We encourage you to sit and soak up the atmosphere in Blackwell’s fireplace inglenooks, which have fine examples of tiles by Arts & Crafts designer William de Morgan. The inviting window seats offer stunning views of the surrounding Lake District scenery. You can appreciate the house as it was originally intended, without roped-off areas. Blackwell retains many of its original decorative features, including a rare hessian wall-hanging in the Dining Room, leaf-shaped door handles, curious window catches, spectacular plasterwork, stained glass and carved wooden panelling by Simpsons of Kendal. The rooms contain furniture and objects by many of the leading Arts and Crafts designers and studios.

This is a lovely arts and crafts house, with stunning views of the lake and a very nice cafe. The white room is my absolute favourite - how I would love to live there! Worth a visit.

I have visited many times over the past ten years and it does not change but its charm remains intact. Though the grounds are small there are nice view out to Lake Windermere, but it is the inside of this building which impresses the most. Crisp straight lines, wooden panelling, white painted rooms and many windows providing light open spaces. The building has had its ups and downs and was once used a school, but despite decay from leaking roofs, it has been well renovated. There is not a lot of furniture, some rooms are almost empty, but the appeal is in the building design. If you are interested in Arts and Crafts design this place should be high on your list of “must sees”. There is an admission fee and a shop and a cafe are on site.

This is a good place to visit if you are interest in architecture or the arts and crafts, especially if Cumbria is raining on you. Most children will probably enjoy a brief visit and a run around the corridors or outside if the sun is shinning. I think most would want to spend a couple of hours here and also make use of the rather good cafe (The Tea Room).

The house is situated in a quiet location so is ideal if you want to escape the crowds of Windermere. Plenty of Arts and Crafs era things to see - well woth a visit.

This house is a pleasure to visit. It is quirky and beautiful. The staff take a relaxed approach so you can be in the house rather than just viewing rooms from the other side of a rope. There are great views of the lake and the art exhibitions are an added bonus.
