Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Enjoy a serene day out at the most enchanting historic houses in the Lake District. When you visit you are invited to relax and immerse yourself in all the beauty and craftsmanship of Blackwell. We encourage you to sit and soak up the atmosphere in Blackwell’s fireplace inglenooks, which have fine examples of tiles by Arts & Crafts designer William de Morgan. The inviting window seats offer stunning views of the surrounding Lake District scenery. You can appreciate the house as it was originally intended, without roped-off areas. Blackwell retains many of its original decorative features, including a rare hessian wall-hanging in the Dining Room, leaf-shaped door handles, curious window catches, spectacular plasterwork, stained glass and carved wooden panelling by Simpsons of Kendal. The rooms contain furniture and objects by many of the leading Arts and Crafts designers and studios.

For anyone interested in the Arts & Crafts movement this house is a "must see". For others, go anyway! The beautiful situation overlooking Windermere is superb, and the interior of the house will woo even those with no previous knowledge of the period. It is a truly stunning example of the movement; the design, workmanship and attention to detail is enthralling. And by the way, it also has a very good tea room and shop!

Fascinating house beautifully restored to its Arts and Crafts origins.Great history of the building itself and its life as a school too. You can just wander round and read about the place whilst sitting in comfy window seats. The views are lovely too. The tea rooms were very good. Pity you couldn't take photos or eat a picnic in the grounds but well worth a visit if you're in that part of the Lakes. Although not far out of Bowness the walk along busy roads is not really to be recommended.

This renovated Arts and Crafts house, hidden away above Lake Windermere, is well worth a visit if like me you are a lover of this period of design. In addition to the house they put on exhibitions of modern artists whose work is in the spirit of the arts and crafts movement. There is a nice if a little pricey, cafe and free parking. This is more of an adult interest visit, rather than a family attraction. We have visited twice - because of the changing exhibiitions, it is always worth more than one visit.

If yo don't have a car it's a bit of a walk out of the town along quite a busy road (25mins) but is worth a visit. Also recommend the cafe for a very good lunch or tea & cake.
