“Excellent Service and great view from room!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2014

We have visited this hotel for the past 5 years and it is still one of the best. The room was spacious, the bed was massive and it was lovely and clean. There are lots of nice touches like the wine glasses, water glasses and bottled water. The bathroom was a little worn with loose tiles but this did not upset us as we are aware the rooms are being upgraded where required and it was all cleaned to a high standard. The view was over the lawn, boats and lake, it was spectacular as the window was the width of the room!
We had an evening meal and breakfast, these were lovely the breakfast was a buffet style full english and you can request poached/fried eggs and black pudding if you want as these are not on the buffet. All the staff were found to be very helpful and polite they even parked our car and brought it back when we requested it. A great place to stay.

Stayed here 14th May for our wedding anniversary, as a special occasion we upgraded to a luxury room. There was nothing luxury about it, it had a very small window lake view so I failed to see what was luxury about it was the same standard as any other room with lake view. We did raise concerns with reception and wear offered another room but it was the same room just a floor up so no different. We had the worst nights sleep as the room was stifling hot and there is no air conditioning only a window that opens about 2 inches. Again we raised this with reception who dismissed it by saying it was shot night. The worst part is that I emailed the hotel upon return to raise concerns with them only to not revive a response so I sent a further email name yet again no response from ignorant staff. Complete rip off for poor rooms. Very disappointed.

We booked this trip at the last minute and had a fantastic weekend. On arrival our car was parked for us, and the helpful reception staff offered to help us with our bags. Our room was clean and spacious and the bathroom was lovely and very well set out. The spa and swimming pool were gorgeous, and the staff at the gym very friendly. We got engaged on the Saturday evening and the staff were lovely. They had obviously helped my fiancé get organised (getting the ring out the parked car and hiding it at reception etc!). They were the right amount of spoiling us - sneaking a bottle of prosecco into the room and champagne cocktails the next day, but without being over the top and making too much of a fuss. It was a real treat to sit in the fantastic bar area all weekend with its amazing bay windows and luxurious armchairs, soaking up the beautiful view and listening to the Grand Piano playing in the background (the pianist, by the way, was brilliant). I found out later that we were given a complimentary upgrade, as the hotel knew it was a particularly special weekend for us; this was obviously an added bonus but even without getting engaged, our stay at this hotel would still have been perfect. It is the only hotel in Bowness which sits directly on the lakeside and definitely has the best location and views. We absolutely loved it - and will most likely return for a honeymoon next May! Thank you to all the staff for their friendly but not over the top service. We had the best weekend! George Irish and Francesca Searle

Stayed for our wedding anniversary 3rd June. The staff were excellent polite and helpful, and we were checked in very early at 12 midday. Overall the hotel was a little old fashioned in its decor but suited period. The room was basic shabby scuffed furniture with cheap pictures on the walls. The bathroom again was shabby a couple of the tiles had been replaced and were mismatched. And along with a lot of reviews we found the room was very hot during night (found a fan in wardrobe the next day!) However the view was amazing!!! Well worth the upgrade (basic rooms do not have a lakeside view). The breakfast again was fantastic, lots of variety and nothing too much trouble-my husband asked for black pudding which arrived within 5 minutes. The gym was well furnished with equipment, spa was nice, relaxation room excellent but the facilities could do with a hot tub and a jacuzzi, there is space outside the pool area which would be perfect for an outside hot tub. Overall we would stay again for the view and food and if the spa facilities were improved I would stay here with my girlfriends for a spa break

Room Tip: You must have a lakeside view room 316 very good. Very quiet too

The young inexperienced staff were run off their feet on a midweek lunch visit.
Our table of six had to send every meal back for repair, or renewal, missing items raw food or one lettuce leaf (I kid you not ) constituting as salad, the miniscule burgers, the miserly and undressed salad the raw chips, and high high prices, rip off merchants who could not even supply a decent pint of lager, Tourist Trap beware

Three night stay midweek in May for the two of us to mark our wedding anniversary and overall it was a pleasant enough experience. The hotel itself is located in a prime location on Lake Windermere close to where the boat trips leave from and is ideally situated close to the centre of Bowness on Windermere.
We were in room 18 which is an Executive Room on the ground floor facing out to the rear of the building. The day we arrived was warm (maybe 22 C) and the temperature in the room itself reflected this. Even opening the window unfortunately did little to reduce the temperature by bedtime and it was a most uncomfortable night due to the intense heat in the room. The following day was sunny but cooler but still at night time the room remained hot and we actually left the electric fan on all night which did help a little. Subsequently the temperature did drop further outside and on the third night was acceptable.
The restaurant is decidedly on the pricey side and recognising this we ate out on two nights, many local restaurants are within just a few minutes’ walk. As well as being overpriced, the menu choice is restricted but at least the food was of a good standard and you do get a lovely view out onto Lake Windermere though. Bread is not even included and costs £3.50 extra, our ‘cheap’ bottle of wine was £25 (second cheapest red if I remember correctly).
Breakfast was included in our room rate but could have been better and the standard varied each day. We would have preferred if it was self-service as tea/coffee would typically go cold before the food arrived as service was slow at times and inconsistent.
Overall, nice enough stay in a decent, good sized room, hotel staff were all fine and no issues with the free Wi Fi. Obviously, the Lake District is in Northern Britain so the weather is not always warm but really a hotel of that standard should have air conditioning. Staying there in summer heat would not be pleasant.

Room Tip: We were in Room 18 on the Ground Floor. From 0700 to 2200 it is noisy from outside due to close vici...

We recently stayed as part of a group. The hotel is well located, handy to the lake and shops. The public rooms are gorgeous, really calming and tasteful. Our room overlooked the lake and was spacious and comfortable. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean and well set out with a shower.
However the service lets this hotel down. Our group was seated at large circular tables for breakfast. We had to continually get up to walk around to get coffee, butter etc as not enough was provided. The staff had to be called over for any request eg more coffee, and maybe because English was their second language and they didn't understand, we spent a lot of time waiting.
We had coffee in the bar one night which was dreadful. I'm not sure when the machine was last cleaned. Another night we had drinks and the bills got mixed up, with one early leaver paying someone else's bill. We couldn't pay our account at reception until it was sorted.
On the whole I would stay there again, just avoid the food areas.
