“Perfect break”
Reviewed March 10, 2014 via mobile

Took my mum and dad for their birthdays as a suprise. I rang a few days in advance to tell them it was my dads 70th and to request a nice room. On arrival we were given 2 lake view rooms and staff had left a card for my dad which was a lovely touch.
Rooms were lovely and views were good too.
Leisure facilities are excellent and views from restaurant spectacular!!
This was our second stay at the hotel and we will definitely return!
Thanks to all staff who helped make my dads birthday so special, he loved it!

This was 3rd time we've stayed at this hotel. Once again had a lovely time only complaint is when we checked out reception tried to charge us for drinks at the bar that we hadn't purchased a closer look at the drinks receipt they were purchased the day before that we arrived felt that was very disappointing as it's our 3rd stay we should get looked after not ripped off.

We had a lovely 3 night stay here for my wife's 50th in early February. When pulling up outside we were met with a warm welcome form the concierge, who later helped unload the car and take everything up to our room, before parking the car for us. The reception staff made us feel very welcome. We had an executive room with a beautiful view over Lake Windermere. We thought the room was very nice. The room service was excellent, the staff in the restaurant were all very friendly and efficient.

We spent the Saturday morning in the spa. My wife said it was the best massage she has ever had...and she has had a few! This was followed by a champagne lunch in the bar, which again was very nice. The pool is a little tight to walk around, and there are not many chairs to sit in around the pool, but all in all we had a very nice time at the Macdonald Old English Hotel.

Booked a 2 night break in an executive suite @ £434 for 2 nights, Walked into the room, what a disappointment, The Room itself was very bland, I have stayed in lots of hotels in my time and this was definately not worth £217 per night. When you pay that kind of money you want a room you can enjoy staying in. It was booked via the website and the description said and I quote the website "Executive Suites at Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa are inviting and luxurious. Many of our spacious Executive Suites have balconies to enjoy views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding fells, providing you with a quiet and inspiring sanctuary in the heart of the Lake District" you got a welcome tray which was basically a tiny bowl of humbug mints and some bottles of water. The mini bar was empty ! VERY LUXURIOUS ! It did however have a Nespresso machine (that must have been the executive suite bit. The photo on the website shows a lovely bed with canopy over the bed with matching curtains, check out the what should have been and what was photos. The View over the lake was absolutely lovely, But the window sill was covered in pigeon pooh ! The comforter on the bed was supposed to be a burgundy colour but was faded by the sun, just altogether disappointing, However, the staff were lovely and we left without having to pay, which was a bonus. Thoroughly spoilt our weekend though.

Room Tip: Phone the hotel beforehand and check your room matches what you THINK you are paying for.

Just arrived back from a three night stay at the Macdonald. On arrival we got a very warm welcome from the concierge and the very pleasant receptionist who upgraded us. Breakfast was lovely and plentiful and the pool and facilities made our stay even more special. Nothing is too much bother for any of the staff who always have a word and a smile wherever you are in the hotel. I can't fault this hotel or it's facilities at all.

Arrived here on Monday 24th February 2014. Was welcomed by the reception staff who couldn't have been more helpful. We stayed in an executive double which had a lake view room 128. The room was clean and tidy. We will be coming back to this hotel for a longer stay.

Took advantage of their winter warmer promotion. Very relaxing mid week break. Everyone went out of their way to be friendly and helpful-- all staff spoke when ever we passed or saw them to wish us good morning / evening etc.. from the management to the cleaners. Very central location-- did not need to use the car at all. Excellent Valet service to park / look after the car. Good standard of accommodation with an excellent restaurant and leisure facilities.

Room Tip: try to get a view of the lake-- well worth the extra money
