We stayed in the newer wing on the left as you look at the hotel from Church Street. As I've said before new hotel rooms all seem to have the same layout, go in, bathroom one side, wardrobe the other, then bed, opposite is a desk/tv stand then a couple of chairs and small table in the window. This was no different. The view was lovely, straight over the lake and across to Belle Island.
The room was adequate, I wasn't disappointed. The beds appeared to be two wide singles pushed together but you could hardly feel the joint! Sleep quality was very good, it was so quiet. The shower was brilliant and gave you good blast!!
The lounge area is very restful and comfortable but why it is thought piped music is necessary both here and in the dining room I know not.
We had dinner on one night and rated it excellent, I had a starter of duck confit with pickles, my wife caramelised parsnip soup (assorted breads were offered) followed by braised beef which melted but had retained all of its flavour and lamb shank respectively. Simple ice creams brought the meal to an end.
Service from the staff was first rate, helpful and very competent.
Breakfast is cooked freshly so not its not a buffet style, it set me on the right track for the day. There are cereals, fruits and pastries on offer. LIke Andrew S I would have liked a cumberland sausage and hope the bacon and all food offered is locally sourced.
After a walk around the Fairfield horseshoe the hotel was a very welcoming and relaxing place to come back to.
I treated my wife to spa treatment on our last morning, she loved it, a fitting end to our stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view at time of booking.

Positives , Excellent lakeside location, within 2 minutes of the centre of Bowness, Good level of service, free parking, bar & dining areas have excellent lake views. Enjoyable dinner with a decent selection for most taste's.

Area's requiring improvement - (room 305) requires refurbishment. Room looks tired & dated in both bathroom & bedroom areas. For example - hole in the ceiling by the light fitting stuffed with paper, tower rail within the bathroom wrapped with red electrical tape. Hallway also requiring attention. Breakfast average (Cumberland sausage please considering the hotel is in cumbria - Black Pudding poor)

Overall - Worth a visit - request a room with lake view (its worth paying a little extra for the views)

Room Tip: Request a room with lake views.

Myself and 5 family members stayed here between Christmas and The New Year as we have done for the past 5 years.
Previous years we have had a few things we were not happy about but we like to go back because it is a beautiful hotel in an outstanding location. This year things seemed to have changed for the better:
The staff were excellent, nothing too much trouble.
The new bar in the lounge was an added bonus as service was really quick and efficient.
We were in the new part of the hotel, overlooking the lake and the Christmas Tree, ( unfortunately this was not lit this year) which was a bit disappointing but the room was lovely and spotless.
The food in the restaurant was fantastic and served so politely and efficiently.
Breakfast was just as good.
If I could have a couple of minor niggles:
I think a jacuzzi would be nice in The Spa. and
This year we had no mineral water in our room.
All in all we had a fantastic stay at a much improved Macdonald Old England
THANKYOU.........We will be back

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking The Lake.

...were the ones who really turned an enjoyable stay into a truely memorable visit. Arriving with two small, albeit well behaved children (7 & 8), we were worried how they might be received. I have to say, that the staff could not have been more wonderful in this regard and made them both feel very welcome indeed. A special mention though goes out to the restaurant staff, who really took the time to chat with us all in a friendly manner and nothing was too much trouble. Evening dining in the restaurant was an enjoyable experience, with a wide selection of dishes and wines. The food was perfectly cooked, well presented and the chefs use fresh, locally sourced produce where possible.

Our room I believe was located within the older part of the hotel and is the only reason the hotel it doesn't achieve full marks, as some of the fittings in some areas had seen better days. That said, it was the only flaw I could find and in all honesty, such a minor one, I feel quite mean even mentioning it. Despite this, the panoramic, unobstructed view from our room over the lake was outstanding. Our double bed was probably one of the most comfortable I'd slept in for many years. The children were in their element, as they had their own little room within the room and raved about their bunk bed.

In the spacious lounge and dining areas, there exists an impressive collection of paintings and antique furniture, giving quite a 'stately' feel to the hotel, as do the extensive gardens. The swimming pool and spa area is impressive, very well maintained and staffed.

In addition to having a commanding position by the lake, the hotel is right in the middle of the town, allowing for shopping etc within easy walking distance.

In all, a very pleasant experience and a return trip would be a real treat for us all.

We recently stayed at The Old English for one night. We just drove up with no booking and the staff went to the trouble to organise two rooms next to each other with views for our family. They showed us the rooms first and made sure we were happy. The rooms were a good size and comfortable with beautiful views over Lake Windermere. Valet car parking was available at no cost. The staff was very helpful throughout. Breakfast was lovely overlooking the lake. There is plenty on the buffet and you can order a hot meal (a bit slow!) for no charge.

The location is great as it is located right near the shops and restaurants.

Room Tip: Try and get a room with a view although the refurbished and newer rooms are at the back with no views
