We recently stayed at The Old English for one night. We just drove up with no booking and the staff went to the trouble to organise two rooms next to each other with views for our family. They showed us the rooms first and made sure we were happy. The rooms were a good size and comfortable with beautiful views over Lake Windermere. Valet car parking was available at no cost. The staff was very helpful throughout. Breakfast was lovely overlooking the lake. There is plenty on the buffet and you can order a hot meal (a bit slow!) for no charge.

The location is great as it is located right near the shops and restaurants.

Room Tip: Try and get a room with a view although the refurbished and newer rooms are at the back with no view...

We stayed here for a post xmas break.
This is a good hotel that included a number of services such as valet parking.
Welcoming environment, excellent location and helpful staff.
We had a very good dinner at their restaurant good menu with a fair amount of choices. THe wine menu was also good but missed to offer a house RED wine.We settled for a good Chilean red that proved to be a good choice.
The bedroom although it had a good lake view the King sized bed was made up by joining two single beds together. This left a noticeable and uncomfortable gap in the middle, very disappointing for an executive King sized room!!!
Breakfast was also a disappointing experience, people were waiting and complaining about poor services. The quality of breakfast food was poor including the coffee that was served.
Otherwise a good hotel.

Room Tip: If you book a King sized executive room make sure it is not made-up by joint two single beds.

We took a feature suite here for a couple of nights and found the accommodation spotlessly clean, comfortable and impeccably maintained. The staff were pleasant and very helpful and breakfast was most enjoyable.
The lounge and bar is a large and deeply comfortable room with windows overlooking the tranquility of Lake Windermere. Worth a visit.

Visited with friends in the Summer, great place to drink champagne on the terrace with good views. Not stayed overnight but the hotel looks a good standard. Very central location, easy to hop on the ferry and travel off round the lake.

Brilliant Christmas package. A hotel with real charm and attention to detail. All expectations were exceeded right from champage afternoon tea to gala dinner. Everything mentioned in the brochure was delivered 100%. The leisure club was clean and well equipped. Well maintained pool, ice room and sauna all added to the fun! Good vaule for money :-)

Booked 2 king rooms b&b for one night just after New Year. Then just after Xmas received an email offer from MacDonald offering dinner b&b for less than the original price. Called the hotel and very helpful lady called Justine changed the booking to the new rate no problem.
Positives:- reception and concierge staff very pleasant and efficient; bed extremely comfortable, nice ambience in lounge , left phone charger behind and it was posted back first class next day.

Unfortunately there were many negatives:-
Room very shabby and tired, one light bulb missing and remaining 2 mismatched, bathroom door hard to close, shower screen grimy and tiles loose in bathroom.
Dinner - despite side plates and butter being on table no bread brought or offered. 2 medium rare steaks ordered , one was cooked far longer than the other. The wine was bought and left on the table unopened and unpoured. Eventually we did it ourselves . One of the desserts was accompanied by ginger ice cream. I asked for the ice cream alone and was told I could only have a different flavor of ice cream which I didn't want. Didn't think to order the dessert and just eat the ice cream! Subsequently the waitress returned and said the chef would allow me to have the ginger ice cream. Glad he was so accommodating as it was delicious . My companions' desserts were tiny and/or tasteless and one was incorrect.

Breakfast - seated promptly and it didn't seem too busy. Coffee arrived quickly with stone cold toast. Eventually someone took our hot food order and good job we weren't in a hurry. After about 40 mins we queried if we were ever going to get our porridge and eggs and received apologies and assurances it was on the way. Other people were complaining as well and we had pretty much given up hope and were about to leave when it arrived. The egg order was wrong but the porridge was good and nicely presented. The waiter explained that the problem was caused by " everyone coming down to breakfast at the same time " Obviously this had never happened before!!

When checking out later that day we expressed our dissatisfaction and without prompting the the manager
cancelled our drinks bill which was a very acceptable way of making it right.

It's a shame as the hotel is in a great position and the mostly young staff are pleasant and enthusiastic but money needs to be spent on the rooms and perhaps staff training to entice us to stay there again.

Stayed here for 2 night between Xmas and the New Year. We had never stayed in the Lake District before and decided to book a package with bed breakfast and evening meal.
On the journey there we received a call from the hotel to check what time we would like to reserve a table for evening meal as the hotel was fully booked and places were filling quickly in the restaurant.
On arrival we left out car out the front of the hotel and the porter parked it for us just up the road.
We booked a standard double but were upgraded to a four poster room over looking the lake - what a result.
Restaurant was great and we were always given a table overlooking the lake. Evening meal was well worth booking, could not fault the great choices, amazing presentation and food was always cooked well.
Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful and even though he hotel was fully booked they were always smiling and nothing is too much trouble.

The location could not be any better and there are plenty of bars and restaurants to eat and drink in.

Would definately recommend this to anyone wanting a great hotel and amazing location.

Room Tip: Lake view rooms are lovely
