“Excellent location & superb service”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

We decided to book a last minute get away with a bit of luxury to spend some quality time together in beautiful surroundings. The MacDonald Old England Hotel & Spa has a prime location in Bowness-on-Windemere right on the lake side and minutes from the piers, shops & restaurants.

Upon arrival there is no obvious parking other than a few blue badge holder spots out front but they provide a valet service. The staff were polite but not overbearing & very helpful with advising hotel amenities or recommendations for local restaurants.

We were helped with our bags to our room which was a good size & though not modern, it was clean & decorated in keeping with the hotel. Our view was of the the gardens, the lake & piers, stunning. There was a wedding on with the bride & groom having photos taken in the garden overlooking the lake.

The lounge area is a great room with large windows overlooking the lake & big comfy chairs & sofas. We decided to have a cream tea & sat out on the terrace in the bar area again overlooking the lake enjoying the sun.

Food was quite expensive, with tuna sandwich at circa £8 but the cream tea was good value. We then went for a wander round the piers, shops, bars & restaurants; which are literally accessible within minutes.

After our sunset cruise we had a lovely meal at one of the recommended restaurants & then went to bed. The beds are comfortable & we had a good nights sleep. In the morning we were treated to a good breakfast with lots of choice for both continental & cooked breakfast and good service. Though we were glad we didn't take sugar as when cleaning the tables the sugar got a blast of the spray used to clean the tables and would probably benefit from clearing the table fully before wiping clean.

We vacated our room but had some treatments booked in the spa, leaving our luggage at reception & our bill open we headed down to the spa. It was was lovely. We didn't see the pool or gym but if the treatment area and relaxation room was anything to go by I can imagine they were of a good standard.

The staff were very friendly & extremely professional and the treatments were great. I have regular facials at my local reputable salon and though the costs were much higher this is usually the norm & to be expected at such hotels.

Would we go back? YES!

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the lake which was breathtaking in the morning with the mist on the river...

Well we decided to visit the lakes for a minimoon the week after our wedding, I looked online and found this hotel, after contacting main reservations on the phone and speaking to a chap called Ross, I was already impressed with the service, he got us a great package which included champagne cream tea. When we checked in the man on reception was so helpful and when we told him it was our minimoon he upgraded us to a suite, this was amazing and had the most fantastic view over the lake, we had dinner the first evening at the hotel restaurant, the food was beautiful and the service was efficient and very friendly. The next morning, we had breakfast, which was really nice, and again the staff were really friendly. The hotel is so central to everything, and we loved the pictures on the walls, showing the history of this hotel. My husband used the spa and thought the facilities were very good and clean. our car was valet parked and was just up the road in their own car park. The bar staff were also very friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. All in all a delightful stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Winander however we were upgraded to this one so not sure how much it would normal...

The executive bedroom overlooking the lake was fantastic especially as we had three days of sunshine. The service in the bar and the lounge tended to be a bit slow. We had booked room only. Not having large appetites we declined the 17.50 pounds for breakfast and 18 pounds for afternoon tea. Praise must go to the hard working porter who took the cases to the room and valet parked the car.

We were on a trip around the UK and we booked through our premier manager at Barclays who got us a price cheaper than what we could on the internet.

we were not happy with the room as it was shower only and the heating was constantly on through the heating pipes that ran along 2 walls of the room

when my wife asked the reception if we could change the room as my toddler couldnt stand the heat and would prefer a bath she was told off for not informing the hotel that we had a toddler in the room, despite the fact that barclays requested a bathroom and was told that we wouldnt have to pay more for a todler in the room (we brought our own travel bed for him which we used on out 10 day journey around the UK. I didnt appreciate her tone nor the way she treated my family.

When we contacted housekeeping to ask for a fan, the man was surprised there wasnt one in the room and about 30minutes later brought along what looked (and def sounded like!) an industrial fan which did the job of cooling the room down.

The view from our room was a brickwall and you couldnt move in the showeroom. Thr room itself was well sized

The best service was from the conceierge who not only helped me move luggage to the room, but also helped me find a space in the underground carpark and said i could leave the car there for the rest of the day while we were on the lake.

I have stayed at 2-3 other macdonald hotels but im starting to question if this was a family friendly one like the others?

location was brill with it being right next door to the lake and the view from the breakfast table was lovely

would i stay here again? probably not.

We booked this as a last minute deal 2 nights DBB for 2 adults and 6 month old baby. Upon arrival the car was valet parked removing the hastle and stress of parking. The hotel itself was very clean with excellent service and nothing seemed to be a hastle upon request. Our room was spacious and room for the travel cot. However it was warm but a fan was provided which helped us have a restful sleep. Food was outstanding compared to other comparable 4 star hotels we have stayed in. The spa was fully booked so we couldn't get any treatments, the pool was chilly but the sauna was steaming!!!! Overall a very relaxing stay. We would recommend this to anybody and we will be returning. Thank you to all the staff that made this stay so relaxing and enjoyable.

Could not fault staff or food both excellent, the service at the restaurant exceptional the vegetarian options very good will definitely return only for longer next time.
Had a lake view room definitely recommend you ask for one.
The only down side is the decor needs a bit of updating.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view room
