“well worth it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2012

Spent 3 nights here in August on DBB package. Location great, Lake views great, complimentary valet parking, and every single member of staff was effusively friendly and went out of their way to help.
Bedrooms very comfortable, great "down.and feather" pillows making for a good night's sleep. Good gym (3 treadmills so always one free) and a good pool with steam room etc.
Food - evening meals simply fabulous: venison, duck and steaks... all cooked slightly pink..utterly delicious. .
If you are looking for a hotel to stay in the Lakes, you would have a hard job finding a better one than this. .

Travelling as a family of four, 2 adults and 2 teenage sons (13 & 15). We were booked into a family executive room however the annex which was allocated to our sons as their sleeping area was so small and so poorly designed and finished that we needed to get alternative sleeping accommodation for them costing us a further £238.00. The rooms did not have air conditioning; an electric fan was provided however and although the view over the lake was stunning as we were on the ground/first floor we were overlooked by the garden and therefore for privacy were required to keep the curtains closed. All of the above we could have quite happily lived with however when we read the hotel information directory in the room and noted that children up to the age of 13 only had access to the pool between the hours of 10.00 - 19.00 and that children up to 16 years of age could only use the pool if accompanied by an adult we were somewhat struck by what felt like unnecessary restriction. However when we arrived at the pool as a family for our morning swim before breakfast and before heading off to do some serious Fell walking we were stopped by the notice at the entrance to the pool/spa which stated that only children aged 16 and above could use the pool between 7.30 - 10.00 and 19.00 and 22.00, when we enquired why this restriction was in place we were advised by the spa staff that 'exclusive members' objected to children using the pool before 10.00 and after 19.00. I stated that as we had spent almost £800.00 for our 2 night stay that we were also 'exclusive members' having paid a substantial sum to use the facilities. We explained that as we intended to walk during the day access to the pool was only required by us before 10.00 and after 19.00. We were allowed to use the pool after we had made our case however I did not feel welcomed by the hotel. The reception staff were very defensive stating that the pool restrictions were stated on the website in response to my stating that the restricted use was not noted on the website nor at the point of booking when I discussed our booking/needs with the hotel directly. I have since scoured the website for the information and have been unable to find anything relating to the spa/pool restrictions for under 16 year olds.
A further restriction noted in the hotel directory under dress code was that shorts could not be worn anywhere in the hotel out of respect for other residents, given that many of the people staying there were ramblers this also seemed an unnecessary restriction.
The hotel did not offer free Wi-Fi instead referring the resident to the BT Open Zone for which a fee is charged and invariably did not lead to a connection.
Overall our impression was one of disappointment, poor value for money and a staff attitude of arrogance and defensiveness. We are not likely to stay again.

Fantastic location right on the lake. We had a spotlessly clean room in the new part of the building that was tastefully decorated and that had ample space. The staff are all helpful and pleasant. The breakfast was very good. Fab pool with spa facilities. Only thing I would say lacked that personal touch, would have been nice to have chocolates or fruit in room on arrival.

My boyfriend and I stayed here in November 2010 for our anniversary. We arrived at the hotel and parked our car in the very small car park located next to it. We checked in very quickly and were shown to our room. The room was lovely, very clean and spacious. It had a television, tea and coffee making facilities and the bath/shower was very good. We checked in to the hotel later in the day so decided to order room service rather than dining in the restaurant. We both ordered steak which was delicious and we didnt have to wait long at all. We had continental breakfast included (croissants and cereal), the food was ok but the view was amazing. The location of the hotel is perfect, it is right on Lake Windermere so the view is lovely. The village is a short walk from the hotel and is good for restaurants and shops.

Never been to the lakes before in our nearly 70 years. What a beautiful hotel the Old England was and its position is simply stunning. The view from our massive framed window in the executive room was amazing and we could 'almost' touch the lake! Arrival and valet parking excellent. The room kingsize, all amenities excellent in the bedroom and bathroom. Five star bar service to terrace watching stunning views at sunset across the lake (my favourite). Our thanks to mike the restaraunt manager, superb meal and champagne, service excellent as was breakfast. relaxing and enjoyed the wonderfuls views early morning before the lake comes to life. the choice of starters before a hearty full english was amazing. A really enjoyable 5 star 3 night stay, well worth the tariff as you only get what you pay for.

Great location in center of town, on lake, comfortable, quiet room overlooking the lake, friendly and helpful staff, everything one would ever want for breakfast. However, there was no WIFI in our room. Don't know if this was a temporary problem or not. Overall, I would definitely recommend the Old England.
