I've now stayed at this hotel 6 times and enjoyed most of my visits. I do find that the experience can depend on the room you're allocated as some of these feel far better value for money than others. Many are lovely and on the occasion that we were upgraded to a huge room with sofas and lake views on 2 sides, our stay was amazing. On two occasions though I've felt disappointed upon walking into our allotted room - finding it pokey and a little shabby. My favourite part of the hotel is the lounge where it's possible to while away several peaceful and self indulgent hours ordering coffee or hot chocolate, whilst cosied up in a lovely arm chair reading a book and looking up every once in a while to take in the beautiful lake views. The food has always been enjoyable - with a gorgeous lakeside restaurant.

Booked our special wedding weekend here at the beautiful Old England Hotel in Bowness and let me tell you we were not dissapointed.....From the very start our wedding co-ordinator Michelle was so very helpful and full of ideas that it was all made very easy for us.At times felt that surely there must be something wrong because we did not worry or stress about one thing, the organisation was really that GOOD! Then the weekend before the wedding disaster struck and there was a major fire in the spa area!!! Michelle assured us that all would be fine and she made sure everything was just that...Our guests and ourselves were actually bowled over by the efficency ,friendliness, and effort that All the staff put into our special day that we did actually have the best day we ever could of dreamt......Thankyou sooo much we will always remember our day with nothing but fantastic memories....p.s. weather was fantastic too!!

We booked this Hotel (which was very expensive) because with the weather forecast being mixed for the Bank Holiday Weekend it had a pool, sauna etc. However on booking in was informed that the pool and saunas were not available due to a fire!!!!!! We should have been told this on booking as we would not have booked. The room was very average (although it was supposed to be a feature room) apparently the feature was the side view of the Lake!!!! Evening meals (we ate off the MARKET MENU) which was £28.00 ea, were made to feel like cheap skates, I dont know why they didnt shout it accross the dining room THESE ARE EATING OFF THE MARKET MENU NOT THE A LA CARTE!!!!!!. The food was average, I expected better, service poor, wine £8.00 a glass (very expensive for a screw top and an average wine) I sound like I am nit picking but I would treat people better if they were staying at my house for free. Why should you have to pay £6.50 extra for a cooked breakfast, isnt £600.00 for 3 nights enough!!!! We still had a lovely weekend but I did expect better. Would not stay again and would not reccomend, however fantastic location, perhaps that what you have to pay for.

This hotel is probably in one the best positons possible in the lakes, it sits right on the shoreline of lake Windermere.
Don't worry about parking, just pull up outside (even though there are double yellow lines) , nip inside and one of the members of staff will unload your car for you and then park it in the hotel car park .
Our luggage was then taken to our room for us.....nice touch!
The views from the rooms and bars etc are beautiful, as is the interior of the hotel.
All the staff we met were friendly and helpful at all times.
We had lunch in the hotel one day and the food was lovely, as were the breakfasts in the mornings.
All in all, a very relaxing break in a very good hotel.

A fantastic hotel, great experience and relaxing stay. Well-done MacDonald Old England you seem to have everything, great staff, great location, stunning views and the luxury factor, we can’t wait to come back.

Four of us (two couples) stayed at the hotel on Sunday 28th August 2011, for one night with breakfast. On arrival the hotel was impressive. Check in time was 4pm we arrived early (lunch-time). The attentive, friendly, efficient and excellent reception staff advised our rooms were not quite ready, but kindly checked us in i.e. allocated us our rooms and we left our bags with concierge who advised they would put all the bags in one of the rooms when available, which they duly did giving us the opportunity to relax and go for a bite to eat, shop etc.

The rooms were fantastic, clean, tastefully decorated. The beds in each room were huge, very comfortable and over looked the lake. What a stunning view to wake up to all I can say is wow, breathtaking. We had booked a classic room but were allocated by the hotel a free upgraded on arrival so a BIG thank you MacDonald Old England it really made us a feel very special and added a touch more luxury to our stay.

Very friendly and helpful staff nothing was too much trouble.

The hotel had a minor fire in their leisure facilities some weeks before and is closed until Monday 12th September 2011; this information is openly available on their website and we were advised of this on arrival. The hotel has made alternative arrangements for guests to use the Burnside Hotel’s leisure facilities which are only 5 minutes walk away.

Breakfast is served in the restaurant down stairs and over looks the lake. With a choice of continental and fully cooked breakfast; there was also a selection of cereal, pastries and muffins. Staff were very attentive and welcoming. What more could you ask for.

Room Tip: Classic rooms don't have lake views but other room types do i.e. executive rooms.

MacDonald Old England is very centrally located in Bowness: mere steps from dock area to catch the lake cruise boats; within blocks of a variety of fine restaurants catering to a wide spectrum of tastes; blocks away from Beatrice Potter Museum. Buffett breakfast is well stocked with wide variety of menu items, from full English style breakfast to amazingly complete selection of cold breakfast items. Especially loved the haddock fillets with eggs. Rooms well appointed with toiletries supplied and very comfortable beds. Comforters quite substantial and a bit much for summer weather for this traveler.

Outside terrace is wonderful to enjoy a bit of the drink; and service immediate and subdued when you do not need attention. Great view of the lake and yacht areas.

Public rooms very well furnished with both the feeling and the smells of an old English drawing room; especially wonderful in the morning light before others wake up and you can view the lake with all the waterfowl (swans, in particular)

Immediately outside the hotel entry there are two wonderful restaurants to the left (as you face the entry from inside . . . sorry didn’t write down the names.) A particularly unique experience is Vinegar Joe’s, the local Fish and Chips Take Away Shop a bit up the street from the hotel and quite popular. Our tour group was visiting mid-week, and at dinner time, VJs, as it is called had a line about a block long. Service quick; and they have a sit-in dining area upstairs from the order station, IF you can find an empty table.

Many shops, especially good for local knit and clothing items. Many people walking near the Lake at most hours of the day/night; so contact with Locals and fellow travelers easy and fun.
