“Lovely Hotel, Average Food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2013

We booked this hotel for one night away on the 16th March 2013. We arrived around midday and the hotels location was great, right next to the lake with fantastic views over windemere. We took a look around the inside of the hotel and it was very grand, with very tall ceilings resembling an old style museum sort of style, typically english, which we liked. We was looking for a romantic, cosy hotel to enjoy which we did. Our room was spacious with a big double bed, and a big spacious, bright bathroom aswell. It had tea/coffee making facilities, tv with freeview channels, hairdryer and an iron (we had to dial for reception to bring us an ironing board, which was no trouble), it was brought up to us within ten minutes.
The only downfall was our evening meal ordeal... We booked our reservation for 20.30 and was sat on a table beside the large windows overlooking the lake. We were offered homemade bread as we sat down with butter as an appetiser, which was a nice touch.
We ordered a bottle of white pinot gricio wine, two carrot and corriander soups and two lamb wellingtons for our mains. The waiter returned asking us if it was white or red wine we wanted, we told him white and he brought us a bottle over...
Our soups were brought out which were very tasty, we were offered more bread by the young waitress and asked several times by an older lady waitress if we and our meals were ok.
We then were delivered our main meals, which were just average meals. one postit-note sized big chip for our potatoes, and a tiny peice of lamb wrapped in thick pastry. My meal was ok, however my boyfriends lamb was literally just grittle, he could not cut through it at all infact he couldn't even get his knife and fork into the meat! He told the older lady waitress who agreed it wasnt edible and we ordered him the chicken meal instead, which she informed us would take 6 minutes... I had finished my meal by the time my boyfriends meal had been brought out. I ate a meal on my own and then my boyfriend ate his... not what usually happens in a restaurant!
His chicken meal was grilled chicken with peas and other various veg with a very thin watery sauce. He didnt enjoy it at all. We complained to the lady who seems to think we was out of order explaining we hadnt enjoyed our meal. We told them we wasnt going to pay for the food as our evening was made feel very awkward and unenjoyable and only paid for our wine... We ordered white pinot gricio which was £18 a bottle, our wine bill was £20, we had been brought out the wrong wine after being asked twice. The food and the older lady waitress seems to be bringing the hotels marks down.
On a lighter note, we woke for breakfast to snow covering the hills and nearby area, breakfast was lovely and this regained our faith, but you cant really go wrong with breakfast.
Another note at breakfast time, the same older lady waitress brought us two pots of tea, one with two tea bags in and one pot with just boiling water... confusion as to why simple things couldn't be done correctly.
Overall a nice room/hotel/break away!

This is one of my favourite hotels very relaxing, fantastic staff, lovely gardens and only 2 minutes from the centre of Bowness. The problem in the past was the food it was bland and stodgy reminded me of my Boarding School days. However it now has a new Manager who is extremely professional and customer relations definitely come top of his list the first thing he did was change the Head Chef (who serves food of a Michelin standard) the food in my opinion is now the best in the lakes instead of dreading Dinner I now love it, all the bread and sweets are now home made by an excellent pastry chef who makes sweets to die for. Definitely a change for the better and I shall now visit more often.

Room Tip: The Ground Floor Annexe is definitely the best slightly more expensive but well worth it and all roo...

We stayed here the 8th & 9th March on a Travelzoo deal & had a fantastic weekend. The hotel was built in1845 & yes there are some areas that need attention but we loved the old charm of the hotel with it's old fashioned lift & huge chandeliers. We upgraded to a lake view room, not sure if this was really worth the money as you are only really paying for the view as our room was average & the bathroom was tiny but the view was nice & was better than facing the car park! We had a 3 course meal both nights & the food was really, really nice! The menu was slightly different on the second night which we thought was good. The breakfast was buffet style & was also very tasty. The staff in the restaurant work really hard & are very friendly always making sure you were ok & had everything you needed. The views from the dining room & bar are second to none! The hotel is situated in an ideal position for exploring Bowness - a short stroll into the town & right on the lake for the boat trips. The hotel has the added benefit of a swimming pool & sauna which we used & had all to ourselves! We would definitely recommend this hotel & would return if we were in the area again.

We stayed at the Belfield for the weekend with our friends. The location was spot on and the hotel itself was fantastic.

We arrived mid afternoon and were shown to our rooms Our room was lovely, very spacious with a nice bathroom.

We ate in the hotel restaurant and we will struggle to have a better meal anywhere else, the food was fantastic. This is also true of the breakfast, a buffet, all you can eat breakfast.

We used the swimming facilities on Sunday morning (at 8.30am!!!)

All in all a great hotel with very good staff and the best location for Lake Windermere.

My wife and i stayed 2 nights bed breakfast and evening meal on 3rd and 4th March. the room was very nice but we had to ask for the heating to be put on as when we returned from our days out we found the room to be cold. the reception brought an electric heater for us as they said the heating did`nt come on till 7pm. We have stayed at quite a few hotels in Windermere and have always liked the look and position of the Belsfied, however at close quaters the outside of the property is in need of a lot of care and attention. The food at dinner was very good and breakfast was good too. the waitress was very good and was very attentive. we enjoyed our stay and would stay again but the property does need a bit of attention.

Room Tip: we stayed in a room that looked out to the forecourt. lake view room would probably be better

We have stayed at this hotel on and off for many years, and enjoyed our stay over half term more than ever. Price and location have previously been key reasons for booking this particular hotel, however the standards in the hotel have clearly moved up a gear since our last stay. The food was vastly improved, the whole hotel seems to have had a deep clean (absolutely everything seemed to be spotless), and the staff were as courteous and efficient as ever. In our opinion the hotel is the ideal base for a first rate short break in the lakes.
