Just returned from our overnight stay at Linthwaite House following their extensive refurbishment. The hotel and grounds are stunning, work continues on further standalone accommodation overlooking the tarn and a new function/corporate building on the old car park. Whilst all the planting has yet to be completed, the gardens and grounds are beautiful and are enhanced with addition of numerous large statues. The wild grass/flower meadow was reminiscent of an African plain with the statue of the big cat stalking the small deer in the woodland. Our room was beautifully decorated and the overall quality of the interior refurbishment is very high, with a contemporary look but with a classic touch. Minor criticism of our room was that the bed was too firm for us. We arrived on Friday lunchtime and departed on Saturday morning, so we experienced lunch, dinner and breakfast from the new menu. All the food was superb and was perfectly cooked. We were slightly disappointed that there was no tasting menu, but perhaps that will be added in the future? The dinner menu is very varied but not extensive, but the addition of the pasta and risotto provides some interesting further choices. The only minor criticism was that the bread provided with dinner, whilst a varied selection, it was all very hard and difficult to eat. Breakfast provided a wonderful selection of fresh fruit and juices, through cereals to several cooked choices. We opted for the Cumbrian breakfast, it was cooked beautifully and was of the perfect size. Only criticism was that it arrived whilst we were still eating our first course, and we weren't the only guests to suffer this! This leads me on to the one overall criticism from our stay, the service was too slow. The staff were all lovely and very helpful, but the standard of service does not yet match the standard of the hotel. So as a final comparison of the old and new Linthwaite, we would say that the new Linthwaite wins on the standard of the decor, finish and gardens, but the old Linthwaite would win on the standard of service, which was always first class! I am sure they will get there, but they must as people expect exceptional service from an exceptional hotel! We will return to see........

This was our first visit after the refurbishment, indeed they only reopened on 1st June and work continues.
The setting is simply stunning and the completed work adds to the main building. It's lovely.
The gardens have been landscaped, whilst planting was still taking place, they look beautiful
The tea was ok - but lacked the sophistication I would have expected. Not offered a choice of tea.....it was twinnings breakfast.
Champagne was good.
Food lacked balance, way too many cakes and sweet things, ( we took some away, but ended up binning some ) too few savouries. 6 finger sandwiches each
Scones were exceptional, but should a tiny portion of cream......though they did bring more.

Service was a tad laboured.....I guess they were all just finding their feet.
Lots of extra car parking.....but car park not clearly signed and rough finished.
It will be good, but I'd give it a few months to see the work finished

We were recommended to stay at Linthwaite by our daughter, who has stayed here several times. At the time of our stay, the hotel was on a phased opening and so we benefited from fewer guests than usual. When we first arrived we were struck by the beauty of the building and its surroundings, which are picture perfect. The garden statues and layout bring to mind Portmeirion. The interior decor is amazing, being all new, and because the number of guests were reduced, and because the staff are all extremely smartly attired, it had the feel of walking into a Bond villain's country retreat!! We had a lovely room with a view over the lake. Everything was to the highest standard, including the turn down service. Food was excellent both at dinner, and breakfast. The breakfast options in particular are very wide ranging. On the second night we ate in the bar. This was because we wished to sample the bar menu, and the bar has a fabulous view over the lake. We had a very memorable stay here. The ambience was unlike anything we've experienced anywhere else. Very highly recommended,

Dear David W,

Thank you very much for this lovely review!

We are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay and our founder, Analjit Singh (fondly known as ‘BAS’), found your comparison to a “Bond villains country retreat” most entertaining.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Stayed at this fabulous hotel for 2 nights & didnt want to leave. A truly unbeatable location for breathtaking views, friendly attentive staff, great food and superbly styled throughout. The gardens were just in their infancy at the time of our stay but the work thats gone into the whole site will pay rich rewards for later visitors. We plan to return later this year.

My husband and I have just returned home after the most incredible two night stay at the Linthwaite House Hotel. Following the complete refurbishment of both Hotel and grounds, the attention to detail and obvious pride from the team completes what will no doubt be one of the top Boutique Hotels in the area and beyond. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed and made to feel at 'home' immediately. The staff were courteous and attentive, keen to exceed expectations. The interior of the hotel oozes taste and style, the South African art and sculpture complements the comfortable yet opulent furnishings all of which are sympathetic to the overall aspect and location in the heart of the Lakes! Elevated in a breath-taking position overlooking Windermere, you can sit and take in the magnificent views, manicured gardens and woodlands which hide a small tarn all of which have been included in the overall vision for this splendid Boutique Hotel - the staff and management team deserve every success, we will be back!
