We wanted a short break away from home with a little luxury included - rather than another of the usual run of the mill, predictable, disappointing hotel breaks. How glad I am that we settled on a 2 night stay at Linthwaite House! The location is wonderful. Although the weather was awful the views from the terrace across Lake Windermere were still stupendous. The lounge and conservatory are beautifully furnished and our room was tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. On the first night we dined in the restaurant - at first glance it seemed expensive @ £50 per head, but believe me it was money very well spent. The food was excellent, of a quality I have only found in some of the top hotels in London. I could not fault this hotel or the staff, who were both friendly and efficient.

We first found a luxury afternoon tea offered on e-bay. Then we got a good offer for a room. The afternoon tea with sandwiches, scones and cake was simply wonderful. And the lounge rooms are really nice. As to the room: First, to get there with your lugage was ok for us; but for seniors who have lugage for several days, this might be rather difficult, due to narrow stairs and lang hallways. The room itself was a bit smal for the price. And you don't want to spend too much of your wake hours there. But is was clean and had a nice bathroom. The little ameneties (toiletries, bathrobe, water, turning down the bed covers etc) were nice and what you expected in such a hotel.
The breakfast was superb - a great choice exceeding the normal fare.
The hotel sits in a great landscape. But wenn you do not want go by car to the pub in town, the walk will be long (20 minutes), steep, and dark at night.
There is an Internet machine in an extra room, but no free USB port.
All in all, we enjoyed our stay here, it was a real nice treat.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed a long week-end at Linthwaite after booking a last minute break. The weather was wet but the beauty of the place is that it makes it even more appealing in inclement weather!

We booked this hotel at the last minute as plans had changed and were looking for something a little special. Linthwaite House Hotel delivered in spades, from the minute we arrived and were shown to our, well presented and equipped room, to the minute we departed after a hearty breakfast we were made to feel welcome. We had afternoon tea as the rain rattled on the conservatory roof and the rainbow arched across from Belle Isle to Bowness, then walked around the Tarn as the Autumn sun set. Dinner was excellent, innovative cooking using local produce. We would recommend this hotel.

Our stay was prompted by the 'glowing' report from our daughter of the overall excellence of the hotel following a stay she had made in the recent past.
We soon realised that her view of the excellence of the service and overall attention to detail that was a characteristic of every member of staff was 100% correct. We found that the overall ambience of the hotel was beyond reproof, and were very impressed by the respectful friendliness of all the members of staff that we encountered.
We certainly plan that in due course we shall return for a further stay.

We're very lucky to be able to travel and stay in lots of lovely hotels all over the world, so we offer this review compared to places like Gidleigh Park, Hambleton Hall, Langhams and The Airds Hotel.
We booked Linthwaite a couple of weeks ahead of our stay, on a whim. We wanted to extend our stay in the Lake District and our original hotel couldn't accommodate us. We wish now we'd stayed at Linthwaite for the entire week, it was so good. Certainly, all future visits to the Lake District will be to Linthwaite.
First, the setting is wonderful - the view, gardens and the little tarn are delightful, The hotel itself is full of lots of a little public rooms which gives the feeling of being in someone's home, rather than a hotel. There's isn't a huge reception area, which again lends to the feeling of intimacy. There's lots of big sofa's, soft lighting, roaring fires, and squishy soft furnishings.
The bar area was an eye opener - very modern (there's a very trendy fish tank in there). Not really our cup of tea, but it worked well. The wine list is "solid" and fairly sensibly priced. There's something for everyone, and plenty of half bottles or "by the glass" selections. There's also a good selection of cocktails - worth a go if you fancy something a little different, but be warned it's very easy to drink 2 or 3, but you'll feel it in the morning (and your bill will be a little higher than you anticipated! - that said, they may seem expensive, but in our experience, pretty standard pricing for a hotel of this standard)
Dinner was a real occasion - home made hors d'oevures and bread, complimentary amuse bouche, followed by some really great and accomplished cooking. Some would argue the service was slow, but to be honest, we love the whole experience of dining in a restaurant, so it didn't phase us at all, and it gives you the chance to spy on your neighbours.
Breakfast was wonderful - do try the French Toast with bacon and maple syrup - delicious.
We stayed in room 16, which was spacious, bright and very comfortable, and had it's own dressing room. I did offer some suggestions on the comments card for a couple of improvements to the room (a tilting make up mirror and some voile at the windows for added privacy). These were responded to within 48 hours and very, very positively.
All in all a really great hotel. I haven't give 5 stars because, 5 stars should be faultless, seamless and complete perfection..... I've yet to experience that anywhere.
Do go, and enjoy....

We stayed for 3 nights, and the hotel was perfect. From the understated but excellent service, to the quality of the food, everything was great. It was nice not having to constantly sign pieces of paper when we ordered something.

We had a small problem with service in the restaurant, and the issue was dealt with quietly and efficiently before we had a chance to comment, let alone complain.

The grounds were lovely, and ideal for a short walk.
