“Perfection sums up Linthwaite House Hotel”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

Having just returned from our friends intimate wedding anniversary celebration, I can honestly say that we will be back. The staff were so friendly and attentive from arrival to check out. The hotel is beautifully decorated and the food out of this world. 5/5 from both myself and my husband. I know the anniversary couple also had an amazing time so thank you for letting us share our time together in such a perfect way.

Room Tip: The loft looks amazing!

First of all, I would like to note that I have never written a negative review on here before but felt I needed to about the appalling stay at this hotel. Three friends and I stayed recently for a special occasion ( a friends 30th birthday). We are far from being a rowdy group, all of us being young professionals and the birthday girl being 20 weeks pregnant. This was supposed to be a special treat for her and we wanted a nice hotel to stay in and relax by the lakes. We made the hotel aware prior to our arrival that it was a special occasion, and yet the service was simply terrible.

Two of us stayed in the superior room, which was nice but very overpriced for what it offered. The other two of our party stayed in the standard room which was well below standard considering the cost. The wallpaper behind the bed was peeling off and it looked in need of some TLC. However my frustration arose when we requested 4 glasses and a wine cooler. Reception advised us that this would cost £6! Needless to say, one of our party complained at this, given that we were paying in excess of £200 each for one night. A gentleman then did bring these items to our room, yet did not even have the courteous to try and hide his annoyance at our request. A member of a party had baked a cake for the birthday girl, and we ended up eating this on paper tissues as it was clear that we would be met with further problems if we simply requested some small plates. On a usual occasion we would have complained further, however as it was her birthday we simply did not want further conflict.

I have stayed in a number of 5 star hotels and all of the service has been exemplary; nothing was too much trouble. I would honestly say that the staff here looked miserable and as if every request is an inconvenience. The assistant manager was thoroughly patronising and insincere. This is simply not acceptable given the cost as you would expect very good service.

On the plus note, we did have a very nice breakfast and the views from the terrace are stunning. However, overall I would discourage people from booking this hotel, unless you are an overtly wealthy middle aged couple driving a 4X4, in which case I'm sure the service will be excellent!

Dear emmabla (for we are not allowed to use your name),

Thanks for your terrible review. I'm sorry you all had such a bad stay. To be honest, the only service you experienced apart from check in/out and breakfast, was bringing your own champagne to the hotel and expecting us to provide all the accoutrements for you to enjoy it; namely ice, ice bucket, napkin, glasses and someone to carry all these things up to your room. Do you think that they don't cost money to provide? 99.9% of people who stay tend to buy their champagne at the hotel.

If you stay at a self catering establishment then by all means take your own alcohol, food, and anything else but don't expect anyone to serve it.

We sell food and drink. It is our business. If you owned a hotel & catering business how would you like it if people brought their own supplies and consumed them on your premises? Even McDonalds would frown on that. Would you go into your local pub with a bottle and expect to be supplied with everything to allow you to drink it for free?

You didn't have dinner so didn't experience the restaurant service. You did have breakfast and enjoyed it. You arrived and were shown to the room and have not complained about that. You had bed turn down and housekeeping prepared and made up your room. So really the service you are complaining about is the fact we charged you for providing things which cost money.

You did not ask for plates and knives etc., for the birthday cake and these would have been provided freely and willingly.

There are numerous reports below this one which testify to the fact that Linthwaite provides top service and there is a high level of satisfaction among our guests. And they don't all have large 4 X 4's which is a somewhat puerile dig at your fellow guests. We do not pretend we are perfect but we try to provide a fabulous service and the staff are in the opinion of the majority of guests wonderful. Staying one night and only having breakfast means you hardly got to experience much contact with them except on check in and check out.

We agree that R1 has a bubble on the wallpaper which has only occurred recently. That part of the house was built in 1901. Please accept our humble apologies but this was unavoidable on a busy Saturday night in August. If we had had more rooms we would have moved you. Our maintenance man is back from holiday tomorrow and will be dealing with it. The standard of decoration and maintenance in the hotel is very good and we do not put up with defects longer than can be helped. But things do happen!

What a sad review to have to respond to. I hope it's made you feel better.

The most beautifull thing I liked is the veiw outside. The view of mountains, green landscape and smilling a fresh air gives you a good refreshment. The hotel is located 15 minutes away from the center where you can walk and take pictures.

Stayed here for a couple of night in July and it was really excellent. The rooms had been beautifully decorated and our bedroom had all the niceties you would expect of this grade of hotel. The food was good but perhaps not quite as good as one or two other places we have stayed but it was imaginative and beautifully presented. There is lots to do in the area and great walks which we thoroughly enjoyed. Staff were attentive without being overbearing and we would certainly go back.

We stayed at the Linthwaite for one night after our friends Ruby Wedding celebration. We found the staff extremely friendly and very attentive to our needs. The food was out of this world and beautifully served. Breakfast was freshly cooked and you could have pretty much anything you wanted. We stayed in room 7 which was everything you would wish for in a bedroom welcoming and clean.

Everything about this hotel is just first class from the service to the views. One of our favourite places, it had been far too long since our last visit. We won't be making that mistake again. Everyone is made to feel welcome - service is attentive and efficient without being over the top and the whole atmosphere is just so relaxing. Fantastic weather meant we were able to sit out on the terrace enjoying pre-dinner drinks and the most amazing views. Dinner was excellent with a good choice of dishes and an amazing wine list to complement. Room had great views over the garden and was very comfortable. Perfect!

Room Tip: We haven't had a bad room here yet, and we've tried everything from standard to the deluxe.
