Visited the royal oak earlier this month and spent £80 on poor food and drinks. Pity we had to pay before we tasted the food. we would have complained but after the response we got when we took back the brown soda water they passed off as coke we had no faith in a positive response, when we took the drinks back to the bar, rather than apologise the bar man tasted them! The garlic mushroom starter was out of a packet, the steak was more fat than meat and the chips were over cooked packet material. Very poor and disappointing.

Very comfortable and good food at a good price. Good selection of typical but better-than-average pub fare.

Just back from an overnight stay here and I wish I could have stayed longer. Perfect location for shops etc and minutes from cruises around the lake . Our room was lovely with a massive very comfy bed . Breakfast was served in our room between 9 and 10 great way to start the day . Staff were friendly and helpful and we really enjoyed our stay

We stayed in Bowness for 2 nights just up the road at the lovely Above The Bay B&B, one of the owners recommended The Royal Oak to us and said that it was dog friendly so we decided to check it out. On our first visit we had the chilli and the giant yorkshire pudding + cumberland sausage, we enjoyed our food and the pub had a nice friendly atmosphere so we returned the next night and had the chicken wraps and the mixed grill. The mixed grill was particularly good and i would recommend it to anyone with a large appetite. The pub could do with a bit of redecorating and the dessert menu was uninspired, however, if you are looking for a good hearty meal in a dog friendly environment after you have spent the day walking up and down hills and / or mountains it is perfect.

Nice to have a child friendly pub, just for a couple of drinks. A two minute walk from Bowness town & The Burnside Hotel.
