“Best B&B I have visited”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

We stayed 3 nights in May Cottage. the location is great: close to town centre and lakes, lots of attractions nearby. As a couple what we loved here is that we felt like home. The owners Sue & Len made every effort to make our holiday special! My husband and I do not eat pork products so were not having a full english breakfast, Sue especially served croissants for us- which is really thoughtful and proves their attention to detail to make their guests comfy & welcome!
The room, bed & towels were all clean and lovely, I cannot think of anything negative overall- neat, clean, lovely B&B, good value for money, will definitely recommend and stay again!

We arrived in Bowness early morning hoping to secure somewhere to stay at the last minute. The Tourist Information Centre by the lake allowed us use of their IPad to search for nearby B&B's free of charge. We telephoned May Cottage mid morning and secured a room, Sue advised we could call round straight away and leave our bags/car - which was brilliant as it allowed us to spend the day wandering around Bowness without having to worry about time restrictions on parking. For those that know Bowness, May Cottage is situated right behind 'The Bellsfield' - perfect central location.
I note that another reviewer took exception to being asked to remove their shoes in the hall, we too were asked which I personally had no problem with whatsoever as I ask visitors to take their shoes off at the door at home too! Far from taking exception, we took it as a good first impression that the owners took pride in their accommodation!
The room itself was clean, tidy, beautiful modern bathroom - ticked all boxes, everything you could need.
We were first up for breakfast, full Engish was lovely - a perfect stay.
5 stars from us - we will be returning Sue, just as soon as we can secure Grandma for babysitting duties again!!

We spent three days at May Cottage having stayed there previously. We were made to feel really welcome and was great to be informed about local things to do and local history.
This is a great venue for couples or singles wishing to explore the Lake District with lots of activities locally and a short drive away.
The owners are really helpful and Sue can't be more helpful in her tips of what to do and see.
I f you are energetic you can use the adjacent hotels facilities free of charge but remember to take your own towels etc
May Cottage is a lovely B&B situated in the Heart of Bowness
The rooms are very clean with excellent facilities
Breakfast is superb and nothing is too much trouble

Room Tip: Free use of adjacent hotel facilitiesfor one of your days

Sue and Len made us feel so welcome after a long train journey from Penzance to Windermere. Clean, neat and tidy room - all we could wish for in amenities and Sue could not have been more attentive to our every wish, including using her computer to check our bank details and email family back home in Western Australia. Len's breakfasts were perfection, including beautifully prepared English breakfast with all the trimmings, a fresh fruit salad to commence and vegemite for us Aussies!! Welcome warm and assistance offered unstinting. Sue and Len have gone to great trouble to make their Cottage look welcoming from the street with a beautifully planned garden, lots of hanging baskets of colour, blue hydrangeas to great you from the road. Have recommended May Cottage to many friends travelling to the UK and hope we can return there sometime in the future.

We spent 2 lovely days in the lakes staying at Sue's fantastic welcoming home. Location was perfect, a few minutes walk from the town centre with plenty of places to eat and drink. The room was like home from home (my other half loved the huge bed). The breakfast was mega, worth getting up for and Sue was happy to help with anything. She offered advice on places to go and visit. Lots of information on lovely walks.
Without a doubt we will be visiting again next year and wont think twice about staying with Sue again.
100% recommended unless your just too fussy beyond words and then i guess nothing would be good enough for you, eh Izzy067?

All in all a fantastic stay and we cant wait to go back.

Thanks Again to you Sue :-)

Room Tip: Room 1 was great, comfortable and spotless.

PERFECT HOSTS, WITH STANDARDS!

Personally, we’re glad “Izzy067” reviewer, was asked to shut the door quietly – at least this host protects the interests of the rest of us who come for a quiet stay.
On holiday, we have all day and night to ourselves, so an informative and happy breakfast welcome is just what we need to start the day in the right direction. We loved the stories and the advice and brochures were helpful.

(Although not being a Guest House or Hotel), on check-in we were asked if there was anything we wanted that would make our stay more comfortable, - all we had to do was to ask. The sweetners are on the breakfast bar with the jams and sauces, for all to share.
Our breakfasts were hot, perfectly cooked and presented, all fresh ingredients and complete with garnish.

Wherever we stay in the Lakes, you’re lucky to get free private carpark; we notice parking was no problem…… if people park properly! The garden and wall baskets are so pretty.
What looks like expensive black out blinds work a treat – not like looking at guests in other B&B’s bathrooms who think their thinner blinds protect their sillouettes!

Our stay was great value considering the tariff included Leisure Facilities, Wi-Fi and Car park, and 5* superb en-suite.

All in all, we thought our stay was fabulous! (Wish they’d take pets so we could bring our Dalmatian.) Location, super. Interesting choice of bars and restaurants – even an old Cinema for the evenings.

If you want a great place to stay, it’s here.

We arrived on a Thursday for a 3 night break. It was jointly paid for by our Son and Daughter for a christmas present. The rate was £85 per room per night and for what we paid for felt it was very expensive. you could stay at the Royal Oak in a similar room for a lot less with easier parking than May Cottage.. The room we stayed in was number 1, I must say it was spotlessly clean. On arrival we went into the hallway with our cases an Sue told me to shut the door, I must have made it shut loudly, she didn't like this, so why didn't she close it ? She showed us to our room and filled us in regarding the area, the room details and then told us to pull the blind down when we needed to go to the toilet. May I suggest she replaces the windows with frosted glass or vertical blinds. The roller blinds darken the room so you have to out the light on. She then asked us if we wanted a cup of tea. Being diabetic I asked for sweeteners in my tea. I only received one sweetener and never had them in the room after that. I bought some splenda on the Friday, took it down to use on cereal on Saturday, there were tablet sweeteners on the table
on the sunday nothing at all. She can buy sachets through amazon to put with the tea trays and tables. Sue is a source of local information but seems to want to send you to garden centres and other gardens. we told her we had a lake cruise booked on the friday so we didn't receive any advice that day. We went to Kendal for some retail therapy on Saturday its a pleasant train journey from windermere. She said its only a town with shops as if we didn't know that, and started going on about the K Shoes outlet then tried telling us about local beauty spots to try. We did find it a pleasant market town try the chocolate house 1657. You can also order online. We had a pleasant few hours there and glad we took no notice of her. The breakfasts were ok, the mushrooms tasted a bit funny, I reckon they came out of a tin. the eggs were fried in a circular shaped frame the yolk was hard and the white was always slimy on top. Sue go to lakeland buy their griddle at £53 tiny bit of oil on the surface flip your egg so both sides are cooked. .Sunday morning - we were going home that day, she was setting all the other guests a test - to spot a famous person. It was like morning assembly at school. She ought to let her guests have their breakfasts in peace. She was always talking and if you dared to say anything, she clearly wasn't the slightest bit interested. We were glad to leave. Needless to say we wont be returning. The Car park worse than the morning lecture. you could easily scrape your car. we never moved ours.We were lucky the weather was glorious, 5 minutes of rain on saturday morning so walking was ok for us
