My wife and I called into Jacksons Bistro during our recent Silver Wedding Anniversary holiday. We had been wandering around Bowness trying to decide on somewhere to eat and Jacksons looked particularly inviting - especially as we had remembered seeing it (but not eating in it) 25 years ago. Figuring that they must be doing something right to have lasted at least as long as our marriage, we though we'd take a chance. In any case, the menu looked enticing.
As it turned out, we were in luck. Although very full (they had just seated a very large party downstairs) there was a spare table for two. With gracious, and good humoured, apologies in advance for any delay in the service caused by the fact they were so busy, we were shown to our seat with the menu, a G&T and an icy cold beer - Peroni, so the temperature was perfect.
The atmosphere was great - lively and bustling - with the most amazing smells coming from the kitchen. Despite being so busy, the service was excellent throughout the evening. Attentive but not intrusive, warm, welcoming and friendly with a good dose of self deprecating humour!
Choosing from the wonderfully priced all inclusive menu (available alongside the full A-La-Carte) we started with a classic prawn cocktail and stuffed mushrooms. My main course was a sumptuously rich lamb and root veg casserole - with plenty of bread offered to mop up the gravy - while my wife opted for the confit of duck. All the food was supremely tasty, well executed and served piping hot!
A rather excellent bottle of red (by no means the most expensive of restaurant wines) complemented the meal perfectly!
Pudding was something akin to an Eton Mess for my wife and a Sticky Toffee Pudding for me. (I judge Sticky Toffee Puddings by the gold standard benchmark of the world famous offering from Cartmel and Jackson's version was certainly up there with the best of them.)
Suffice it to say, the time we spent at Jackson's Bistro turned into one of our abiding memories of the holiday. Great food and a warm, personable welcome. We won't be leaving it 25 years before we visit again!
