“Clean, comfortable room, beautiful views!”
Reviewed September 12, 2012

My husband and I spent a Friday and Saturday night at Hawkrigg Guest House as a "mini honey moon". We booked the room the day before and got the last one available which was the four poster room with the lake views.

The rooms are clean and spacious enough and the view of the lake from this room truly makes the room!

No bath, only walk-in shower, but this was not a problem for us at all.

Greeted by the owner on arrival and shown to our room, unfortunately there was a problem with the plumbing so the toilet would not flush. They said that the plumber had promised to be there earlier but was very late. They let us use the bathroom in room number 2 which was fine by us, and I got to see this room also. OK, so the bed does not face the window in this room, but it looked lovely nontheless.

I would have liked Emma, the owner to have given us a bit more information about what to do and where to go, especially as she seemed to be aged the same as my husband and I (we are 33 and 31 respectively), but her introduction was rather brief in my opinion. I don't know whether everyone gets seen on check in, as a couple of times we saw a room key with a "Sorry we are out but welcome to our hotel" note left by the entrance door.

On a very plus point, Emma and her partner gave us a lift from the ferry on Saturday night back to the guest house which was a blessing as we would have otherwise had a walk up hill of almost a mile in the pitch black (we were in the Lake District for relaxation, not walking!). That was kind and very appreciated.

The breakfast was very fresh and absolutely perfect. This was served by Emma's mother on both days and she was an absolutely lovely lady who enjoyed chatting to all the guests.

Finally, enjoyed having a glass of wine in their garden area which is furnished with wooden benches, and also has a children's play area. This was a great facility as far as we were concerned.

All in all, I would recommend this guest house if you want to be away from the main towns for the peace and quiet, but still close enough to get there easily. It was peace and quiet and relaxation that we were after, and we got just that. I would stay again.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 1 which had the four poster bed (a modern one, not the old, carved style) and the...

We stayed here in early August and were not disappointed! Having stayed in many b&b's, this was one of the best.
We stayed in the four poster room with fabulous views of Lake Windermere.
The owner, Emma was extremely friendly, with nothing being too much trouble.
The breakfast was freshly cooked and excellent.
Would definitely recommend and are looking forward to staying there again in the future.

Room Tip: Fabulous views from the 'Four poster room'

I couldn't fault Hawkrigg Guest House. the location is a short walk to the ferry and was clean, bright and peaceful. My husband, myself and our dog were made very welcome and our room (1) was comfortable and kept spotless despite the dog :0). Tea, coffee and biscuits supplied daily in our room and an immense breakfast of cereal, fruit, toast and full English if you can manage it with fruit juice and tea or coffee. The local pub (Cuckoo Brow Inn) is a few minutes walk and serves lovely food (dogs welcome) we went there a few times. All in all a fantastic break. Many thanks to Emma and family for a lovely stay.

We stayed at the Hawkrigg Guest House for a weekend recently and it was just the ticket. Ideal location, just a stone's throw from villages and Bowness and yet so incredibly quiet and peaceful. Spotlessly clean, all fittings, fixtures and decor in tip-top condition. Emma, her partner and her Mum were there if you needed them but they weren't "in your face" as some owners can be.
The substantial full English breakfast kept us going all day.
We took the ferry to Bowness instead of driving and it was very enjoyable, much easier than trying to find a parking space.
Go there for a chill out weekend, we recommend it.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet with views of Windermere or the Langdales.

We recently stayed at a number of B&Bs in Scotland and the UK. Most were good; Four nights at Hawkrigg were exceptional. Location was away from the main Bowness tourist bustle, but you could still walk there using the ferry. Hawkrigg's location and surroundings were as good as it gets. Two pubs (with good food) a short walk away and plenty of beautiful walks nearby. The building was classic Lakeland and very well maintained. Importantly for us, there was very little noise coming through from the only adjacent room. Breakfast was excellent, as was the breakfast room. Emma, Mark and Judy were the best of good-humoured hosts whilst also being unobtrusive.
Our only complaint? Four days was not enough!

Room Tip: Room on the NE corner has 2 windows and excellent views and is quiet.

We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay here at Hawkrigg. The breakfast was yummy and the location was perfect. We had a Four poster bedroom with a lake view (albeit far from the lake). There is a lovely small residential pub in the nearby village that we walked to. We enjoyed not having to decide who would have got the short straw and have to have driven back to the guest house. A good location for exploring the lakes if you have a car.
