Came here for a friends stag night and Alton Towers. Nice hotel in general. As the previews reviewers have said - rooms are a little old but still clean and we all slept fine in the twins and doubles we were allocated.

Food, drink and all round service were excellent.

Only gripe was that the newspaper did not arrive on time before we had to check out.

I stayed here recently with my partner, firstly, the hotel's location is superb, just a 5 minute walk to the town centre. We were greeted by a lovely receptionist when we checked in. Our room was a little dated but very clean and spacious. We dined in the restaurant, the food was superb and very reasonably priced. All the staff were very welcoming, friendly & helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Overall we really enjoyed our stay, the hotel is an old coaching inn and has alot of history which I personally much prefer to these chains of hotel's, we will definatly be staying again.

The staff have always been very pleasant and helpful each time we have visited, the room was clean, it may not be 'modern' but it has character unlike many 'chain' motels. The restaurant always serves excellent food at a very resonable price. Never stayed in the Annexe but its next to the police station so should be secure.

Have thought twice about writing this review as I have stayed here before with no problems. However, on this occassion I was kept awake from 1.30am to approximately 5am with the noise of furniture being moved on a wooden floor and someone using a vacuum cleaner all night. I tried phoning reception to see what was going on, but there was no answer. I finally managed to nod off around 5.30am and slept in until 9am (missing breakfast) in order to catch up on my sleep. When I mentioned this to the receptionist, she said that it was most probably the night porter getting the conference room ready for the following day!! Well that was considerate. Other than that, I can't comment on the food as I was asleep during breakfast. The bar area is Ok and the staff friendly enough. Room was dated but reasonable as was the en suite. WiFi Internet had to be paid for. However, this night of no sleep was enough to make me think twice about staying here again. Luckily I wasn't paying this time.

BoroughArmsHotel, Manager at Borough Arms Hotel, responded to this review, May 7, 2010
Dear Member

Thank you for your feedback.

First of all, the management would like to apologise for the discomfort you experienced during your stay at the hotel. Our receptionist correctly explained to you that the night porter uses the evenings as an opportunity to vacuum our function rooms, however this is generally only done on evenings where a function has taken place. As this issue has never been raised with us before, we have never had any cause to restrict our night porter from doing so, however now the matter has been brought to our attention, careful consideration will be given in the future.

Thank you once again for your comments. We always welcome constructive feedback which enables us to provide the best possible service to our guests and sincerely hope that this incident will not deter you from using our hotel in the future.

We attended a large Christmas party at the Borough Arms and although they were exceptionally busy , we were extremely well catered for.
The food was excellent, well cooked and well served. The bar area although crowded was very efficient and every member of staff was very courteous and very attentive. The manager himself came around to check everyone was satisfied with the food and service. We didn't stay overnight as we live nearby but friends of ours who stayed there were well pleased with the accomodation.
This hotel compared favourably with previous venues which were much more expensive.
Thank you all for looking after us so well.

This hotel typifies the old saying, 'You get what you pay for.' The room we booked was only £55 and didn't we know it! The 'elegant styling' described on the website simply means that they haven't been bothered to decorate for 20+ years. Dirt had set in and there was a general feeling of old, grubby stuffiness about. Room was tiny (the legal minimum for a hotel room actually) and the shower screen was cracked. Forget having shower gel etc. - you just don't get it!

Next time, we will be using a chain hotel where at least you get a clean room!

My daughter booked this Hotel for my husband and I to stay in as it was his 60th birthday and he was meeting with relatives who live in the Newcastle area. The room was very basic and very small even though the small room was not booked. The thing that bothered us the most though was that the toilet seat was broken and not very clean and the shower was also dirtly and broken. I refused to use it. No toiletries were supplied apart from a small soap. If you require any shower gel etc. you have to ask. Oh and take a hairdryer with you as one is not supplied. Dont get us wrong we are not ones usually to complain and only do so when we feel it justified. The room we were allocated showed no bearing to the picture on their site. We were offered full English breakfast but only one cup of tea or coffee. No refills were offered and the staff had disappeared into the kitchen so there was no one to ask.
