Description: A pub for more than 400 years, The Swan and Talbot in Wetherby was once a posting inn on the Great North Road. Originally named the Dog and Swan, the pub was, until 1611, allowed to bear the coat of arms of the Swann family who lived at Askham Manor in nearby Askham Richard. The 'dog' was a talbot hound - an extinct type of hunting dog whose closest modern day descendant is the beagle - and the pub's name was changed to The Swan and Talbot. The pub and letting accommodation has recently seen extensive refurbishment and is proving to be a popular haunt for many of Wetherby's locals and destination diners. Inside, the pub has low ceilings befitting the age of the place, and at one end, a huge fireplace over which hangs a brief history of how it acquired its name.

“A Fine night out”
Reviewed June 7, 2012

Whilst the food was great, the service was not upto previous standard. Having visited this restaurant over the past 30 years, it has ebd and flowed. The greeting was hessitant, and the welcome strained. Not what you would expect in an old Coaching Inn of historic values. The chef is great, supplying food on a limited budget, and it tastes FANTASTIC. But the offers are not what they seem. 2 4 1 nights have limited choices at inflated prices. Still good value for money these days. The cellar is GREAT - fantastic guest beers at great prices.

“lovely sunday lunch”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

Myself, my partner our 2 year old son and my parents dined here on sunday 22nd april 2012. We opted for the 2 courses, 3 of us having starters and my mother having a desert. The starters we're lovely...the soup was red hot and very tasty and the pate and toast was also fabulous!! service was quick though it was quite busy and the staff that we came into contact with were pleasant enough. We had 3 sunday dinners and a steak and mushroom pie for our mains...the meat on the dinners was great....the beef was loely and the lamb just perfect..my dad ho had the pie said the steak 'melted in his mouth'.The vegtables, yorkshire puddings and potaoes were cooked to perfection too. Had a great meal and will be back!!!

“Good food and a pleasant atmosphere”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

After some pretty poor dining experiences in Wetherby, I decided to check out this establishment. There is a pretty extensive menu, with a good variety of choice and price options. My friend had a senior selection ( duck salad ),which was advertised as a smaller portion size and incurred a price reduction - £ 4.99 ( I believe ) and included a pot of tea. This was of good quality, with a varied salad of ample proportions.I had the chicken wrap, which consisted of two large wraps,of generous and too big for me,proportions and again, was very good. There was quite a wait for the food, but this was to be expected as the food is freshly prepared, but needs to be taken into account if time is short. We sat in the bar area which was adequate for our dining experience. The staff we encountered were pleasant and polite. All in all, an average but pleasant experience.
