“lets itself down”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2013

We went on a special offer 2 night break and accepted a lot of things about the Riviera that we would not have, had we paid the full rate. The staff were pleasant but seem to have little or no training/enthusiasm. We arrived a little early and were told 'you're right, you are early and your room's not ready, you can use the facilities if you want. I had to ask/suggest we leave our bags at reception- 'suppose you can'! We were not shown to the leisure centre just given directions - the place is sprawling. Laid back or couldn't be bothered??We ate lunch in the empty restaurant (unfortunately soulless, nice lights and paintings but feels like a posh canteen), burger was surprisingly good as by now we were not filled with confidence. when our room was ready we were again just given directions and were surprised to find that we had to go out and behind the main building as our room' overlooks the garden' but we could pay extra for a sea view. the walk to these rooms could be vastly improved by screening off some areas/touch of paint/planting. the 'garden' is in fact scrubland next to an overflow carpark. Filled with foreboding we discovered however that the room was bright, warm and clean if a little small. The bathroom spotless. We m enjoyed the pool, steamroom and sauna although did get looked at strangely when we asked if robes were available - that's a no then. The breakfast was disappointing, the young man that served our lunch told us that there would be a continental buffet as well as english and that we would also be able to choose fried, poached or scrambled eggs. The continental consisted of a pile of weetabix or cocopops, some Morrisons economy yoghurts, a few tired pieces of fruit and jugs of unidentified juice. There weren't any eggs on the hot breakfast buffet and when we finally attracted the attention of a member of staff to ask for eggs she said (from across the room) 'they're coming' - no choice or assistance offered and left us standing there- we gave up after 5 mins and returned to our table minus eggs- some fried eggs finally appeared on the buffet several more minutes later. We did not bother to go to breakfast the second morning. In the afternoon wanted a beer from the bar and could not find anyone to serve us, had to knock on the door of the kitchen and ask the guy washing up if anyone was about!
It is a shame that the owners have obviously spent a lot of money on refurbishing the place but it feels that it's missed out on lots of basic simple hospitality issues ( a warm professional welcome/ offers of assistance/ let me show you/ take a seat and I'll bring it over when ready etc) It was far from busy but the only member of staff that seemed proactive was a chap in a fleece (maintenance/facilities?) who stepped in to help the struggling receptionist make our room keycard and a chambermaid. Sorry Riviera but you need to up your game if you want repeat business/recommendations

We stayed for one night. On arrival we felt the place looked quite shabby but were pleasantly surprised by the rooms which have been refurbished well. Very clean, comfy beds but not big enough for more than a few days. The gym wasn't great, old machines and very small although the pool looked nice. It took me a while to get a coffee from the bar during the afternoon as none of the staff approached me I had to go and find them. Was told the bar shut at 11pm but when we asked for a drink at 10.30 pm we were told it was closed, however, we did eventually get a drink. Breakfast could have been better and not enough staff behind the reception desk when we checked out. Had to wait for the one person behind the desk to finish on the phone before we could do so, despite the fact that a member of staff was walking around the reception area doing nothing.

The hotel is nice. The staff are friendly. The room was lovely clean and fresh.
The breakfast is tasty, however the service is very slow that first morning we left and had breakfast out.
The hotel is 3 mile out of the town and costs £6.50 for taxi into town.
The pool and the gym is lovely and clean.
I would not of thought this hotel is worth £140 a night.
Find if you are put on the first floor be very careful of the steps as they are a bit slippery

This hotel is a former holiday camp dating from the 30s. it has been refurbished to a good standard. there is not a lounge for guests just a few tables in the foyer.Staff are polite but as it was winter there was only bar snacks available. It took 1 hour for the food to arrive and it was bad quality. Not doing that twice? Room was comfortable but a little on the small side the bathroom was excellent. the views were excellent and it was in a nice spot. We would stay there again as long as the manager is not on duty, he was a nightmare.

Room Tip: you will need a room at the front overlooking the bay

Spoke to a lovely, helpful lady on the phone to book a table & discuss a meal for a veggie & a gluten free diner. She said that there would be no problem. We arrived at 7, when the table was booked & NOBODY came to see us to take our orders or to see if we were ok. 2 or 3 staff were trying to look busy for 25 minutes serving a noisy group of men. After the 25 mins we put on our coats & left, again no-one noticed or came over to see why we were leaving. Haven't heard from the restaurant manager as to why we left & why we didn't have our meals. This was very embarrassing as I took some of my family and told them what a beautiful place it was.

Checked in to the Riviera Hotel after a long day and 3 1/2 hour drive. My company had booked through Laterooms and reserved the booking with a card.

Although other hotels seemed to have managed to use this card to pay as authorised, the Riviera couldn't, and I was asked to settle the bill. Apparently the number was incomplete and, according to the receptionist she'd ' failed her mind reading exams at school so unfortunately I'd have to pay'. After a long day, I didn't find it so funny.

The room was well laid out and clean apart from the toilet that the cleaning staff appear to have missed from the previous occupier.

I didn't get a good impression of the place and was happy to check out in the morning.

Chris9R has pretty much summed up our experience too when we were there Thurs & Fri 21st and 22nd Feb.

Our deal was through 'Living Social' £99 B&B for 2 nights plus bottle of wine if took evening meal ... and for this it was a very good deal. As said in the other review £120 per night rack rate is far too high .. although I can see why someone could think it worth that much. Personally I'd say that an £70-80 per night price tag about right ie comparable with your Holiday Inn Express' and the likes.

The difficulty the owners have is that there has been some seriously major work done to upgrade the rooms and the communal areas .. and for the most part this has been successful as the 'inside' is really quite nice. The problem however is that - as an ex Pontins location - the building structure is set up for people to access their rooms and the communal areas from the outside and hence it doesn't feel luxurious to warrant a £120 per night price tag ... especially as the leisure area was a little small and you had to get your timings right in order to be able to get in the gym.

As a wedding location and the ability for guests to stay on sight .. i'd say it is pretty much ideal as there was a really lovely entertaining room with bar etc

The restaurant is nice enough as is the quality of the food .. and the persons working there do the best they can .. but they are in desperate need of leadership/direction and further training if the hotel really wants to get higher reviews as the service really didn't match where I think the owners want to go .. but I would stress .. I don't think this is the staff's fault per se as they are helpful enough.. just lacking in knowledge of what constitutes 'excellent service'.

We had a wonderful - if absolutely freezing - walk along the coastal path from immediately outside the hotel doorstep .. and if we'd gone the other way we could have gone along the shore into Weymouth .. which is about 2.5 miles away.

Weymouth is nice enough and we also enjoyed a beautiful meal in town as well as a lovely drive and walks around Portland.

All in all a lovely place for a couple of days .. although it might actually be quite good for a week in the summer being right on the beach

Dear sir/madam,

Thank you for your recent review of your stay at the Riviera Hotel and for the kind comments made.
We are in the process of engaging new members of staff in areas of the hotel and with the kind comments I have recieved from the guests has been encouraging especially in the restaurant and housekeeping departments.
The weather is still very cold and I hope it soons warms up, as you have mentioned the Wedding seasons starts soon.
I look forward to welcoming you back to the Riviera Hotel in the near future.

Kind regards
