We went on a special offer 2 night break and accepted a lot of things about the Riviera that we would not have, had we paid the full rate. The staff were pleasant but seem to have little or no training/enthusiasm. We arrived a little early and were told 'you're right, you are early and your room's not ready, you can use the facilities if you want. I had to ask/suggest we leave our bags at reception- 'suppose you can'! We were not shown to the leisure centre just given directions - the place is sprawling. Laid back or couldn't be bothered??We ate lunch in the empty restaurant (unfortunately soulless, nice lights and paintings but feels like a posh canteen), burger was surprisingly good as by now we were not filled with confidence. when our room was ready we were again just given directions and were surprised to find that we had to go out and behind the main building as our room' overlooks the garden' but we could pay extra for a sea view. the walk to these rooms could be vastly improved by screening off some areas/touch of paint/planting. the 'garden' is in fact scrubland next to an overflow carpark. Filled with foreboding we discovered however that the room was bright, warm and clean if a little small. The bathroom spotless. We m enjoyed the pool, steamroom and sauna although did get looked at strangely when we asked if robes were available - that's a no then. The breakfast was disappointing, the young man that served our lunch told us that there would be a continental buffet as well as english and that we would also be able to choose fried, poached or scrambled eggs. The continental consisted of a pile of weetabix or cocopops, some Morrisons economy yoghurts, a few tired pieces of fruit and jugs of unidentified juice. There weren't any eggs on the hot breakfast buffet and when we finally attracted the attention of a member of staff to ask for eggs she said (from across the room) 'they're coming' - no choice or assistance offered and left us standing there- we gave up after 5 mins and returned to our table minus eggs- some fried eggs finally appeared on the buffet several more minutes later. We did not bother to go to breakfast the second morning. In the afternoon wanted a beer from the bar and could not find anyone to serve us, had to knock on the door of the kitchen and ask the guy washing up if anyone was about!
It is a shame that the owners have obviously spent a lot of money on refurbishing the place but it feels that it's missed out on lots of basic simple hospitality issues ( a warm professional welcome/ offers of assistance/ let me show you/ take a seat and I'll bring it over when ready etc) It was far from busy but the only member of staff that seemed proactive was a chap in a fleece (maintenance/facilities?) who stepped in to help the struggling receptionist make our room keycard and a chambermaid. Sorry Riviera but you need to up your game if you want repeat business/recommendations
