Review of Portland Plateau

Portland Plateau
Ranked #7 of 71 things to do in Weymouth
Certificate of Excellence

Attraction details
Owner description: A varied 4.7 mile walk classed as Moderate along the South West Coast Path as it heads along the east coast of Portland, passing great scenery, historical forts and old quarry workings. Many of the paths around Portland Bill are accessible for powered wheelchair users and rugged pushchairs. The first ½ mile of this route follows a level wide path, but after this becomes more varied with some steep and uneven sections before reaching Church Ope Cove. From the cove to Portland Heights the path is relatively level apart from one steep climb.

“Portland Bill Lighthouse”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2013

We got there by part bus ride and part walk. If you are disabled or quite unable to walk I would suggest driving there, but we enjoyed the walk which took us about 1 hr each way once you had got off the bus. We visited a lovely cafe and a pub and enjoyed the views. If the weather is in your favour it's lovely but wouldn't bother otherwise. We didn't visit the rest of the island.

Walked from Southwell to Portland Bill Lighthouse then back along the other side to Chesil Beach. Fantastic sea views on both sides. Such a refreshing walk :-)

“Beautiful views - we did the drive in the evening at sun down. Worth it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

The views were amazing of the water and beaches. You can drive all the way up to see the Lighthouse. It's funny to have such a beautiful place with a prison having such a scenic view! Worth the drive at sunset....maybe take a picnic and find a nice view to relax.
