Sandworld Sculpture Park

Recommended length of visit: <1 hour
Owner description: Weymouth Sand Sculpture Festival aka Sandworld is a seasonal attraction set within Lodmoor Country Park, Weymouth - next door to the SeaLife Centre, and next to a large car and coach park. Sandworld is an all weather attraction created by local artists to showcase the talents of International and UK Sand Sculptors undercover in a huge marquee. There is a large covered sand pit. Visitors are encouraged to "have a go" at sandsculpting having been inspired by what they have seen. It is sometimes possible to engage with artists as they work on new pieces which are added to the site from time to time, and always possible to relax with a drink, snack or icecream at the on site cafe. Activities such as filling sand bottles are available at extra cost, and a gift shop completes the experience where you can buy a postcard of your favourite sculpture or a souvenier of your visit. The attraction has a link to Weymouths long tradition of Sand Sculpting, as Mark Anderson - co-founder of Sandworld - is the grandson of Fred Darrington, who began sculpting on Weymouth beach back in the 1920's. Mark is an International Master in his own right, and can often be found in the sandpit at Sandworld helping aspiring sculptors - young and old - to engage in this most therapeutic of activities. Length of visit times varies widely depending on the individual or groups' level of interest and/or engagement with the art, and of course the weather (although most of the exhibits are undercover, a visit in November will not be the same as a visit in August). Some visitors stay 10 minutes, some stay all day, either way is cool. All are welcome at Sandworld - please come and see us! Open between Easter and Halloween

This was our second choice of day out after Nothe Fort was closed. Found it quite interesting how the sand sculptures were made and the sculptures themselves are quite impressive. Didn't spend that lond in there though, about half hour and you're done so on this basis it isn't great value for money.

“Fabulous family time!”
Reviewed October 31, 2012

We visited Sandworld during half-term Halloween week and had a great time. The staff were in fancy-dress and they were all super friendly - even the scary looking zombie! Our two little boys (2 and 4 years old) liked the huge sculptures (massively impressive) and couldn't get enough of the sandpit. Sandworld has made a smart move by having two sandpits, one for under fives only, and one for older children (and adults!) to practice sculpting their own masterpieces. For us it meant that our two could play without older children interupting them. We spent a great two hours, and it would have been longer but for our parking ticket running out...

Highly recommended for those with children, or those with an appreciation of artistic creations.

“The Art of Sand!”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

Sand like we had never seen! Sand Sculpture isn't something that you see much on Scottish Beaches - so we hadn't seen anything like this before. From the moment that you enter and see a sandcastle like no other, you have to keep reminding yourself that this is all done in sand. The main exhibit changes from year to year around a theme (we had a very pleasant chat with one of the Directors about all this - it's clearly a passion for him). This year it's Greek Mythology....next year it'll be different.

The sculptures themselves are immense - and it's partly the scale that makes them so impressive - and partly the sheer skill and diversity of the sculpting techniques. The crisp outlines and incredible detail were just mind-boggling. There are interesting panels telling the story of each sculpture, covering the artist's inspiration and the techniques used. There's also a lot of information about how such large creations are built in sand.

We didn't have kids with us....and it was getting late so we didn't try sand sculpture for ourselves in the giant sandpit for the purpose...but I can imagine that it would be great fun for a family.

It wasn't expensive to get in - we felt it was fantastic value for money - it's very unusual and intriguing. Definitely worth a visit.

Loved the giant sandpit for the children to play in. The sculptures were amazing and the information on how they were made very interesting. Staff were all friendly and helpful. WE all enjoyed it, thank-you.

All the way from Scotland to see us, ok, not just us, but we were on the agenda, so perhaps this is a record? Thankyou so much for coming.

“Overpriced”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

I feel harsh gicing Sandworld only a two as the sand sculptures are impressive. However, having been spoilt with the sculptures on Weymouth beach (I believe done by the same talented chap?) for so long, I was disappointed at the lack of exhibits and variety.

Was in and out in five minutes which wasn't value for money. I've no doubt you'd enjoy it more than I did if you haven't seen so much of these type of sculptures, or if you have kids as there was some activities available for them, but this was a disappointment for me.

You can't please everyone all the time, but we do try. Tripadvisor reviews represent 0.15% of our visitor numbers, and of these, only 90% rate us "Excellent" or "Very Good" so we are disappointed. We would like to see "100% Excellent", but this is perhaps not realistic.
