We recently married at Moonfleet Manor and we couldn't have wished for a most memorable day this was thanks to Neil and Laura for their excellent support and planning, from the wedding service and throughout our special day and assistance with having had to rearrange our wedding at short notice. The food was excellent throughout our weekend stay as was the service of all the friendly staff from hotel reception to the waiting staff where nothing was too much trouble. Our wedding guests truly enjoyed the effortlessly homely and unstuffy ambience that the Moonfleet offers. We are looking forward to returning for to the Moonfleet for our anniversary if not before.

Thanks again to all the staff at Moonfleet for making our 2 night stay over half term comfortable and really relaxing. Our children loved the play area, pool and crèche...as usual! We noted all the improvements, especially the soft furnishings - it makes Moonfleet feel loved again. The addition of the small lounge off the main lounge was also a welcome addition. Food was excellent, as ever. Looking forward to finding an excuse to visit again soon.

We went to Moonfleet having been to Ickworth, a grander hotel in the same chain. However, we prefer Moonfleet for a number of reasons.

The food and wine are really very good indeed. You'll have to spend an absolute fortune or visit a Michelin starred restaurant to get better - and I doubt it will be much better. The wine choice is very good and the Sommelier offers an interesting wine tasting experience that really opens up the senses and our awareness to taste.

Meanwhile, the facilities for children are second to none. There is a creche, an enormous indoor play room which I believe used to be an indoor bowling green, a swimming pool, outdoor play area and lots of gorgeous walks. The Nannies from the creche knock on our door on a Sunday morning at 8am, take our boys away to have a fun breakfast and enjoyable activities while we have a quiet and leisurely breakfast, reading the papers. Sigh... it's like being in our twenties again!

The indoor play room makes this hotel the place to be in bad weather. It never feels crowded and there are trampolines, soft play, two table tennis tables, air hockey, football area, etc, etc.

If it sounds like we've been there a fair bit, we have. I think we've been three times this year. But it's our favourite place to stay with our energetic 2 and 5 year old boys. Some of the reviews say it's shabby. It's certainly not as spick and span as some places we've stayed but it's all the better for it. With the overall feel of the place and the friendliness of the staff, it's like staying with family as much as staying in a hotel.

We can't recommend Moonfleet highly enough! We can especially recommend the ground floor room called Ratsey - it has its own door onto the garden and the bed is quite simply the most comfortable we've ever slept in.

Room Tip: We have stayed in Ratsey on each of the three occasions we have stayed at Moonfleet. It's a fabu...

Lots of positives - quality of food was excellent, childrens activities are excellent, the lounges in the main buildings are excellent - so why only 2/5

The hotel describes itself as luxury. In our view it isn't. Our family suite (2 adults & 4 children) had plenty of room and 2 bathrooms. But, for over £400 per night, I don't expect to be sticking towels in the window gaps to stop all the doors banging.

I don't expect to be eating high quality food, that is priced accordingly, on stacking business conference chairs.

I don't expect to be charged £45 for 5 childrens sandwiches on white sliced bread.

However, it is good, I just didn't think it was luxury and I thought it was overpriced. I compare it to Watergate Bay in Cornwall and It doesn't stack up for value.

Room Tip: Not Constantine

Dear robinmorgan7,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on Tripadvisor following your recent stay.

I am absolutely delighted that there were plenty of positives and I can assure you that your feedback is already in hand - sometimes you don't realise that you have an issue until you experience some extreme weather.

Obviously the children's sandwich charges were a mistake and rectified when pointed out, with our apologies, at checkout.

It is a great pleasure to be compared with such a great Hotel as Watergate Bay (although not quite apples & apples) and I understand that those comparisons are natural. The great thing for us is that our customer feedback, both positive and negative, continues to spur us on to get better at what we do and to keep on improving our facilities. Please do follow our refurbishment journey via our facebook page and I hope that our ambitious improvements meet with your approval.

Kind regards

Neil

We've been regular visitors to Moonfleet for many years but stopped visiting a couple of years ago due to issues already noted in other reviews. We were a bit apprehensive about returning but we needn't have worried, the hotel is back to its wonderful, idiosyncratic self and we had a lovely, relaxing break. The food was excellent although breakfast is a little confusing. Service in the restaurant was a little slow at times but mostly very good and all the staff were wonderful with our daughters. We stayed in one of the coach houses and it was fabulous. Masses of space, lovely décor and very, very clean. The spa was great; clean, fresh and bright and my treatment was very good (thanks due here to Debbie). We were worried our daughters may be a little old for the place now but with Snoopy, the swimming pool and free Wi-Fi they were kept entertained throughout our stay. We will definitely return soon.

Room Tip: The coach house rooms are great for larger families or those wanting lots more space and access to a...

Dear 2010 curlygirly,

Thank you so much for taking the time to post a review on Tripadvisor. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and that the experience was like "the good old days".

The change of ownership in December 2011 has really re-envigorated the group and I am confident that we will go from strength to strength.

Hopefully, that will mean that we will see lots more of you!!

The most strange and eccentric hotel I think we've ever stayed in. The hotel looks as though someone had lived there for decades after a spell in 'the colonies' and furnished the entire place with spoils from his travels. Quite bizarre but amazingly intriguing. The hotel has rooms in the old building and newer rooms but more than that, has the most fantastic facilities for children. There is a huge indoor play area with a football pitch, trampolines, a small billiard table, soft play and bikes for the little ones and much else besides. Don't worry, adults can sit and watch and call up drinks while waiting for their little ones to wear themselves out. Then there is the crèche which is staffed by wonderful staff.
Outside there is a small play area with swings and a large green for kicking footballs and various other things like a trampoline. Around the hotel there are walks and a small 'beach' which is not really a beach you can use to swim or play in, at least it wasn't when we went.
The dining isn't exactly five star but the restaurant is set up for high tea, for the little ones, a later sitting for children and parents until about 7.30 and a later sitting for adults only. I couldn't fault the food and the staff were obviously well versed in the serving of food to small people! The breakfast was really good, nicely set up and there was plenty of things children would like.
We had our grandson in the bedroom with us and the room was lovely, huge and warm and the bathroom, of course, was one that looked like it was an original from the old house but that was a good thing. The shower was great and water hot.
The lounges were many, all beautifully furnished and there are lots of little hideaways where you can enjoy a quiet read and a drink.
All in all, the most marvellous place to take children, eccentric it may be but such fun.

We stayed three nights on a 'mid-week break' package with our 3 kids (4, 3 and 5 months) and had a fantastic time. All three kids loved the creche and we were really impressed with the staff there, particularly as we'd never left the baby before. The swimming pool proved to be a hit while the play barn was great for our family (soft play, trampolines, footballs etc). I probably wouldn't be quite so keen if the kids were much older, over eights might tire of the facilities more quickly, but for our family it was perfect. Nice little touches like towels folded into animal shapes on our arrival and a good selection of kids foods at each meal. Yes it's a little 'shabby chic' in parts but that just means we could relax rather than being on high alert that the kids might mess something up! Also good base for day trips- we particularly enjoyed Weymouth (donkey riding on the beach) and Chesil beach.
